With my brother in town, we were able to face off over the skies of Europe on the evening of Friday August 15th 2014.
As the story unfolds...
Bombing Run on Prototype One
Manfred von Richthofen observed the peculiar nature of aerial warfare.
He felt like a mail currier getting to enjoy the view from his machine and it’s interaction with the elements.
His colleges had underestimated the speed of the enemy Breguet formation, and now had been flying for the last 4 minutes to catch back up to them.
It had always seemed strange how one could see the enemy in the distance, be forced to fly the void, and could simply enjoy the view while waiting.
He looked to his right, and could see his brother Lothar in formation. Lothar, judging from the look on his face, was likely feeling the same way. Manfred noted to himself that no one could really understand the feeling one gets when flying next to their brother in such a noble cause.
Manfred nodded, and, with professionalism, his brother nodded back.
The smoke from Manfred’s aircraft had resulted from the initial pass on the enemy; but for all purposes, his machine remained unaffected.
Kirschstein, now leading the formation, had been the closest to the Breguets when the formation banked to intercept; and, began to break the calm with the popping of his twin Spandau guns.
The 4 Breguet formation (3 French and 1 American) were obviously setting up their bombing run.
Unknown to the German aviators at the time, an English spy had reported a German aircraft prototype being assembled within the large hanger on a fixed base operation; and needed to be destroyed now.
The mission called for the destruction of the main hanger (housing the prototype), the munitions depot contained within a barn, and lastly with great remorse, the barracks containing the engineers responsible for the aircraft’s design.
1)Richthofen’s first pass on the Breguets caused smoke to billow from his machine
2)Manfred notes the American’s Breguet sinking to the ground from Kirschstein’s victory
3)He could see the Americans had lost their engine and now struggle for a clearing below
4)As much as he had hoped for their successful landing, they are shredded by the tree line
5)Breguet 2 overflies Breguet 1’s hit and destruction of the munitions depot to his left
6)and clenches his toes in preparation for the run on the hanger… Best guess and he releases
7)The hanger explodes exposing the burning wreckage of what was the prototype
8) Breguet 2 yanks and banks hard right, knowing he must battle his pursuers next
9) Kirschstein had been busy with Breguet 2’s observer and began to fall into trouble
10) As his fragile machine spirals, he raised his goggles in preparation for the ground
11) Manfred was surprised that Breguet 1 had just survived the pounding he delivered it
12) now having to draw attention onto the landing of his battered machine
13) Unaware of his brother’s successful crash landing, Lothar takes deadly aim and fires
14) Breguet 3 had just missed bombing the barracks when it exploded to Lothar’s delight
15) Kempf was ripping up Breguet 1's shop window trying to finish Manfred’s work.
16) Breguet 1 had been headed for home and Kempf was determined she not make it
17) but piston damage blocked the kill, increasing distance from Kempf to Breguet 1
18) With Breguet 1 barely in the air but safe, Breguet 2 sees Lothar closing fast
19) Breguet 2 smokes as Lothar shreds her on an un-apposed pass, knowing her last is next
20) The hand of fate deals luck on the crew of Breguet 2…
21) and Lothar is denied his kill…
The End…
