Thread: Could Clear Static Cling Window Stickers be useful to add features to Combat Mats?

Default Could Clear Static Cling Window Stickers be useful to add features to Combat Mats?

This is my first new thread I've added to the forum and it may be a bit of a silly question. Has anyone tried getting Static Cling Window Stickers printed with custom images to be used with the combat mats. I was thinking of getting some done with clouds and some other much larger ones done with no-mans land with trenches. The stickers would be transparent so the terrain of the map would be partially visible through the sticker. They could then be placed over the map to add features as needed. But I really don't know if it will work. Has anyone been mad enough to try it? One drawback I know about is I can only get them done in gloss printing so they might come out too shiny.

Don't recall seeing that idea before Nicola, you may be the first one mad enough to try it !

That sounds like a good idea, Nicola. I did wonder whether something like that could be used to make flying bases for aircraft with non-standard firing arcs like the WW1 Lohner L flying boat and many WW2 bombers.

This is what is worrying me! There must be something wrong with the idea but I can't work out what it is.
I got the idea when I remembered the sticker type books for small kids where the transparent vinyl stickers had images on them and could be easily removed and used again and again.

I use OHP acitate for this purpose Dave. I can't see why Cling window sticker should not work if you can get it printed.

If you are worried about them being shiny you might try a light spray of a flat clear. All my painted miniatures have a coating of gloss clear for protection and then a layer of flat clear to get rid of the shine.

Thanks - that sounds like a good solution.
Now all I need are some good images of clouds, trenches and stretches of no-mans land.
I can get it printed but there's a minimum order value and so I'll need to do a lot in one go. Otherwise, I just try a cloud to see what it looks like.

Instead of doing a big costly professional print run, I think I'll start small and do the printing myself with my inkjet printer. Maybe start with some clouds and some small scale features.
I found there's clear self adhesive paper that can be ordered from Amazon

A very good idea there, Nicola. Please post some pictures of your efforts.

If you like a 3D look, cotton or pillow stuffing make great clouds.

Thanks for the advice. I gave up on the idea of using clear decals and sticking the images directly onto the combat mat. If I need to move a decal, it's likely to damage the mat or the decal. In addition, with clear decals there's issues in printing white. Last but not least, non-clear vinyl is a lot cheaper.
So, I decided to go for 'A4 Matt Vinyl Self Adhesive Sticker Paper'. 40 sheets for £22 pounds (including delivery).

Using these, I've done clouds and balloons. I'm now in the middle of creating a no-mans land combat mat with trenches which I plan to finish this week. It will be 12 inches wide and fit between the two combat mats. I plan to stick the A4 printed out sheets of vinyl onto A3 sheets of 2mm deep 'funky' foam sheets and then cut-off the excess.

You're certainly not the first person to have the idea.

I have some static cling inkjet paper in the desk draw at home that I bought for this very purpose.

I have yet to have a chance to try it out, but I was, quite ambitiously, thinking of adding a "cleared" area to the map large enough to land a plane on for a two-seater rescue mission.
But I was also thinking of adding targets and other mission features.

Let me know how it goes.

When I get round to it, I try to remember to post the results here.

I like that idea! You could make a nice green base mat and use it as a base for some kind of modular battlefield.
