Thread: What are After Action reports?

Default What are After Action reports?

Hi all! I have a couple of questions regarding this:

    1) Is there a specific format for filling these out?

    2) Is there a specific place for posting these?

    3) What sort of action do I report on? Do these have to be missions with an objective or can it just be about a few friends flying together for a while?

    4) Do you get medals for posting these?

    5) Do you need to include photos?

    Best regards,

Photos really help if you can do that.

The AAR medal is awarded after X amount of AARs posted. (look at the medals tab on the blue bar above)

Report on any action you like if it is interesting. Most of the AARS are part of campaigns here but can be anything.

You can pots then in the Missions page if not part of a campaign, if part of a campaign the in the campaign thread.

Just read a few AARS and see how they are generally done. I don't think there is an official format.

    Hi Cole,
I have written AArs about evenings at the local club, games with my daughters and more formal structured scenarios with pictures and without.
I think medals are involved eventually, look at the medals tab at the top and scroll through the medals and what is required to win them
Format is what works for you
Some AARs belong in specific threads, some you just post in the missions section.
    It's like Peter said.
Mostly it's about having fun, and sharing the experience.

    So have fun

Not really but you could look at some of those already published, there are many variations.

    2) Is there a specific place for posting these?
Yes depending on WW1 or WW2, first pick the correct era. Then decide where you are going to place the AAR.
    a. If the AAR is a campaign specific one, ie Over the Trenches, midway Rising or Fire in the Skies, then place the AAR in the appropriate section.
    b. If it is not campaign specific then place it in the relevant Mission Discussions/After Action Report Section.

    3) What sort of action do I report on? Do these have to be missions with an objective or can it just be about a few friends flying together for a while?
    a. Campaign specifics are generally organised around a set mission with set objectives.
    b. Any other can be of your own devising, with or without friends (using the solo rules if you wish).

    c. In either case try and include some pictures.

    4) Do you get medals for posting these?
Check the medal section, yes you do for posting: 10, 25, 50 or 100.

    5) Do you need to include photos?
You don't have to but it enhances the AAR and can aid you when you come to write it up.

    Best regards,

Neil Thanks for the post on how/where to put AAR's. I always forget where they should be and have just posted in the section. Last few were in the 1/144 Guns of August post.

Lot's of different styles of AAR out there as others have mentioned, for me as I play pretty much solo games this is where I bring the game to life through story telling to share with not only the members here but also friends that I share the link with...... my dad especially is enjoying the OTT Early Doors Stories, not just by me but also others who post.

    Thumbs up

I get a real "buzz" out of writing up the AAR's & try to give my pilots personalities as do many others.
Some original photos also add to the atmosphere.
