Thread: The Italian Convoy!

    Lightbulb The Italian Convoy!

Played at the more reasonable hour of 9:30 at Guns of August 2014

News of of an Italian convoy heading south brought swift action from Malta!

Forces: Italian: Three CR-42`s and three C.200`s defending convoy.

Raf: Three Bristol Beaufort`s bomb equipped. No escort.
    Setup:

Italian: A convoy of three transports escorted by a light cruiser and two destroyer. Centered on map. Italian defenders over convoy.

RAF: Two firing sticks from convoy. The chose a head on approach.

A disclaimer. In today's episode of Attack the Convoy Bristol Beaufighters will take the place of Beauforts!

This game was another wild and woolly adventure. More collisions than a barrel l of monkeys! The true facts are that the Beauforts shoulder their way over the convoy
through fighter and flack. All were lost but not before, sinking two transports and shooting down two fighters. Soon supplies will be getting short in North Africa

Well I missed all these Rich.
Looks just like the scenario I'm in right now.
Nice to see the aircraft in action.

A fun game. The Beau`s did their job! Another game where all the experience was one one side. This time the Defenders. Don`t let the youth of some of these players fool you, Between the August and February games they racked up a score of kills!

    Intersting plane mixture.

    Falcos versus Beaufighters. :erc:

    Lots of collisions?

    Did you use altitude rules?

That might works - when you force (with time limit for example) Beaufighters attack primarily ships (or generaly ground targets, not fighters), the mission can be balanced. The worst thing for balanced scenarios is using Beaufigters as fighters - they are just hell reapers in this role.

That's what I like about Malta so much. It throws up all sorts of anomalies when combats take place. Basically you use what was to hand at the time for the job you need doing.

No altitude rules were used. The Majority of the players were first time players of WOW/WOG. Those Beauforts just look like Beaufighter!!! One of these days i will
order some Peters Planes excellent Beauforts and Blenheims. That is made the really nice Beaufighters!

As i just stated they are actually supposed to be Beauforts. Rob and i have discussed this before. The Beauforts were designed to be stand alone non escorted attack craft. Coastal Command had great success in this role in the correct conditions! Flying out of Malta it was quickly discovered that these tactics were costly. When the Beaufighter arrived it started out as escort Beauforts. Then they became the attack force!

How very true! Spare parts would dictate force composition, not a carefully typed attack order!
