Default Carbon-monoxide (CO) poisoning at home

At the risk of being a carbon-monoxide (CO) bore here, I just want to use this opportunity to warn anyone who uses piped or bottled gas to either cook their food or heat their homes to get an audible carbon-monoxide detector as soon as possible. Also get a detector if you use a wood burning stove or open fireplace.

CO audible detectors cost around £14 here in the UK and will detect the build-up of this deadly and odourless gas in your home, place of work, boat, cabin, caravan or trailer before it reaches fatal level.

My reason for requesting this is that my son James' body was found at his home on August 3 after police forced the door. He was badly decomposed having been dead since around July 17. All initial toxicology was normal but when my daughter and I searched his home last week we found clear signs that he had used his mains gas oven shortly before his death and there is no effective ventilation in his small home. I tested the ventilation with smoking incense cones. None of it worked, the smoke did not deviate.

We had the funeral on Friday August 22 but we are expecting the second toxicology report to show high levels of CO. He was found collapsed, lying across the foot of his bed. In the absence of any other cause and with the evidence of his recent oven use and the complete lack of ventilation, CO becomes the inevitable conclusion.

Carbon-monoxide is a peaceful death as the victim simply goes to sleep. They do not suffer. It is the friends and family who suffer afterwards. Initial symptoms can include sore throats and 'flu-like' symptoms while more advanced symptoms can include depression and psychosis. As my son was bi-polar he was especially vulnerable as we would not have recognised these later symptoms.

Please be safe, please be careful, please buy an audible carbon-monoxide detector.

Very sorry to hear that Barry. My deepest condolences. That is why I always care for ventilation in my house. At least the micro one, through special windows system.

    Thank you all.
I am pushing for a change in UK law as - at present - if I have a solid fuel stove installed then a CO detector is mandatory. More people use mains or bottled gas and yet there is no similar requirement. There is a huge hole in protection for people in their own homes.

If any UK member will email me I have a prepared text which you can copy and paste to your own MP. I am returning to London for two days to continue clearing my son's home but I will deal with all emails when I return.

    Thank you

    Barry,
Condolences and heartfelt prayers are on their way to you.

SWMBO and I bought a plug-in CM detector unit a while ago. I forgot to remove the battery backup tabs, so when the rechargeable batteries ran down 12 hours later, a strange alarm went off. At 4:00 AM. I then read the instructions. We now know what the alarm sounds like, if it goes off for real.

With deepest sympathy to you and your family... As a father of three boys, I do not ever wish to see them go before me, and no parent should have to endure this. Having lost my wife at age 26, the only thing worse would be a child... May you find your peace with this. God Bless!

    Sincerely,

We don't have such detectors but it's something we are going to look for in the very near future now defenitly.

So sorry to hear this sad news Barry.
It is so easy to overlook the silent killer.
Even though I have two alarms, I was astounded to find that one I thought I renewed only a couple of years ago was actually 7 years old and two years out of date. Complacency on my part could have also had severe consequences. I back you fully in your initiative to save further lives, and would just like to extoll the need to not only provide alarms in every room with a gas or open heat source, but also to check them regularly and replace when out of date.
