A number of floatplane versions of fighters were planned on the assumption that they would be needed at forward bases without facilities for conventional aircraft.
The Pacific theater was the main consideration, though the Med, as shown above, was considered a possibility.
Thanks to the engineering technology and resources of the Allies, particularly the USA, these proved un-needed, and so not developed.
The Japanese used 2 seaplane bases to support their October attacks on Guadalcanal with bravery and daring, though ultimate failure.
