Thread: R.N.A.S. Armoured Cars.

  1. #1

    Exclamation R.N.A.S. Armoured Cars.

The Royal Naval Air Service was a very forward thinking service as shown by their willingness to provide Aircraft superior to those of the Royal Flying Corps.
How many of us also know they were the first service to employ Armoured Cars. At its height there were 20 Squadrons of Cars in service & they were used for scouting, communication & rescuing pilots from crashed aircraft. Mainly based on Rolls Royce vehicles they became redundant when the War deteriorated into Trench Warfare. They were surprisingly used in the Gallipoli Campaign & subsequently in the desert battlefields after being taken over by the Army. Parts of the RNAS AC section were also involved in the design of Tanks.

Anyway here is some pics of a wonderful model of a RNAS Armoured Car plus an original picture.

Interesting post Barry - where and how were they used at Gallipoli - I assume in some of the subsequent landings where the terrain was more suitable.

I keep meaning to buy a couple of those as models John.

There were 12 (I think) RN armoured cars in service in Südwestafrika in 1915. The southern African ones were Royal Navy-style grey (call it battleship grey, but then, I am no expert in these matters...). The BE 2Cs that arrived with them were never serviceable in the desert - the heat warped their frames. The South Africans operated 12 Henri-Farmans during the campaign. The Germans operated an Aviatak from Nov 1914 onwards...

Some things never change -- over 100 years later, and I'm still having to explain to Infantrytards what an Air Force is supposed to be used for (and why the AF gets so much more R&D money).... :P

No Karl. Its one from a Facebook modelling site. Wonderful work but not sure if it was scratch built or from a kit. Looks fairly large scale.

I built one of these in 1:144 for one of the OTT scenarios (along with an Eberhardt).
The paint job didn't come out as well as I would have liked, but I was pleased with the model itself.

Yes, it's balsa. The fenders are made of card stock, and the MG is a pin snipped short.
It's really not a hard model to make once you divide it up into its constituent shapes.
