100 Years Ago Today in WWI Aviation History - 15 August 1914: "First" "reported" air battle - . A Reuters dispatch recorded "In another place a French aeroplane yesterday encountered a German aeroplane. The French pilot chased the German, firing with a Browning. The German aviator did not reply, but fled". The first reported air battle has been censored so its location is unknown.
"Reported" is the important part here -- there's unconfirmed reports of two US mercenary pilots having at each other with pistols in 1913 during the Mexican civil wars.

I wonder if the Browning was a leaver action?
It was most likely a Browning pistol.
