Thread: Clipper on the road . . .

  1. #1

Default Clipper on the road . . .

Ah the joys of modern flight . . .

Last month I was enticed to visit Eric and Sue in Illinois! What a great trip! They put me and my travel elves up big time and we spent some time training the Illinois Elves in the ways of Wings Production!

There were awaiting us a box of fresh Shapeways ready to process! A new bottle of Future Wax was produced and the fun began!

Sue found a perfect plastic cup and filled it with Future and the minis were given swimming lessons

A wax paper landing field was set out for them to dry on - later it was switched to foil : )

Sue touches up the drips . . .

Being highly skilled with chop sticks was a great help too!

Resting after the first dip! Two were done, three would be a bit better we discovered.

Now to the painting! Sue has the skills of a fine artist and jewelry maker!

Eric, not so much! But what he lacked in experience he made up for in enthusiasm!

    Time for a bite!

Eric discovers he likes purple . . .

    A lot he does!

Chicago beckons! Had to take a trip into the city, Eric is a great tour guide - if only the Italians could refrain from using their hands to talk while they are driving!

Book stores! Yeah! Found this series and bought all they had! Color plates and photos galore!

Also a good series I had not seen . .

Time for more food! A tasty Persian place . . . yum!

Saturday we were called to action at the LGS! It was going to be a Zeppelin Mission! What a coincidence!

More on the event in the AAR section - part of the crew, we had a great turnout with lots of new fliers. Eric brought plenty of planes and they needed them. I lost count as the 9th plane fell to the deadly Zeppelin!

Amazing wall paper in the restroom of the game store!

Lego frame on the mirror as well!

Alas the big jet called and I was once again soaring to Arizona, the 110 degree heat wave was hard to endure after the delightful cool and calm of Bloomington and the warm friendship of the troops. Next time I will come equipped with more time, more cash and a few Zeppelin upgrades . . .

Thanks to Eric & Sue and George & Colleen for a great visit! Now back to those pesky Zeppelins . . .

Thank you for the story of your visit with the great pictures. May I ask what the Pledge does to the models? Does it seal the holes and give them a smooth surface for painting?

Yes, it fills and seals. I had never used it, but others have and it seems to work great. I would give the models 3-4 coats to match what I get with clear gloss automotive acrylic.

Thanks for your commentary on the trip Dave.
Apart from the food and the Pledge, it filled in a lot of holes for me.
I am now off to buy a Chinese meal because you have made me feel hungry with all that food, but mainly to pick up a free pair of chopsticks.
Thanks for taking time out from your Zeppelin production to share your trip with us.

It might be just me, but the guy painting the planes looks like a natural. The deftness with which he is holding the plane in one hand and the brush in the other, well, I have not seen such skilled-technique before, and I doubt I will see such technique ever again. Personally, I think we're looking at a future painting contest winner.

Looks to have been a great trip there David. Wargamers can be a warm, welcoming lot. I was put up at a friends house in Chicago back in 2001 and every effort was made to insure my comfort. This even though I knew the gentleman only through written correspondence. I trust your journey was every bit as memorable as mine. Good to have you back home too.

Having had dinner with Sue and Eric I can only say you were treated like royalty by them. They are very good people and I am very lucky to have met them. Hope to see them again next year.

ohhh i agree though im dismayed to see your predilection toward purple as that will make about 80% of my painting ideas seem......unoriginal when i finally get around to it

Hey, you made it to Chicago, David.

The last time I saw the city was on last thursday in Transformers 4 in the cinema.

Thank you for this nice trip description, David.

I'm shure you had a lot of fun with Eric & Sue.

How did the Illinois pilots perform versus the Zeppelin? Your hosts showed a lot of fling talent at Origins.

Thank you everyone for the nice comments; I'm encouraged. I really enjoy mini-painting, and now have set aside time each week to do it (got to tear myself away to do work sometimes).

Not only can she paint but she is very aggressive in the sky. Did a good job a Origins last year and was glad to meet her and Eric. Great people.
