Thread: 4-5 days in Prague with the wife

Default 4-5 days in Prague with the wife

The wife surprised me today and asked if we could change the trip we had been planning to Paris to Prague instead. So, now I'm trying to figure out an itinerary for 4-5 day in/around Prague the first week of Sept.

We of course want to see the Prague Castle and Charles Bridge, but what are the other things we should definitely take in? How much will language be an issue? I speak a little Japanese and she has some high school French... other than that we are typical Americans and only speak English

One thing we are trying to figure out is transportation once we get there. We'll be driving from Germany (a work trip for me), so we have a rental car. Should be turn the rental car in as soon as we get there and just walk/take trams to see the city, or would it be better to keep the car to get around?

Thanks for any help you can give us.

Welcome to Europe Keith. You should get a good exchange rate for the old € vs $ so spend it wisely on Pils lager

    Hi Keith,

Prague is fairly compact and we had no difficulty walking around while we were there. Neither did we have much problem with the language as most people in the 'tourist' area speak some English. Apart from the obvious cultural attractions, the National Technical Museum is worth taking in (http://www.ntm.cz/en), as is the Army Museum. Not too far outside Prague and do-able by public transport is the Aviation Museum at Kbely, and a bit further out and probably better driving there (you get off the train at a small station and you imagine you hear banjos!) is the Army Technical Museum (tanks, artillery). This website covers the last 3 places - http://www.vhu.cz/english-summary/

Enjoy, Keith. At the same time I will be on your side of the pond - Orlando with a side-order of Pensacola.

May I recommend a good tourist guide?

and you will have to find the scene of the Prague summer con - I'm sure some of the local forumers can give you some pointers ! http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sho...ummer-Con-2014

Thanks for the info guys. Neither of us are beer drinkers , so those aspects don't really interest us. Vodka and wine are more our thing... but not major things.

Steve, what part of Prague did you stay in... or if you remember, what hotel?

  6. #6

    Default

Can't remember the name of the hotel, but it was in Resslova, which leads off of Jiraskuv Bridge. I remember where it was because it is along from the Church of St Cyril and St Methodius, where the assassins of Heydrich were eventually cornered. The church itself is worth a visit as it has a small museum commemorating the siege. Even if you don't take the demon drink, find an excuse to visit the U Parachutistu restaurant and bar, 7 Resslova, which apart from the good food has the walls lined with photos of the Czech Parachute Brigade and members of the Czech resistance.

Great news! Hope you'll enjoy my hometown.
Prague is not only about beer. We have also a lot of wine cellars and wine shops where you can taste Czech and Moravian wines. Especially our white wines are delicious.
And I strongly recommend you to take a boat trip in the city centre at the time when the day is turning to the night and the lights in the streets are turning on.

Would be nice to arrange a meeting of our group and show you the Ladinek's shop, where the Prague Con taking place.

The wife does like wines and I've been known to do a shot or two of vodka from time to time... so I'm sure we will find something to drink while we are there.

I definitely want to vist Ladinek's shop and meet all our Czech pilots for a game or two. I'm still trying to work those details out with SWMBO I've already talked to Nightbomber and Marechallannes to see if they could possibly join us. We will be there from the 30th until the 5th, so we'll have to figure out the best day and time to make this work... thoughts?

Excellent, Keith. My plan is to join you on the 2nd Sep. around lunch time, spend an afternoon/evening with you, Sven and Czech friends if they are present in Prague then and return next day. Does not it interfere with your plans?

I am too busy at my office these days during summer case files are attacking from all sides. Family business finishes me off . There has been no WoG gaming in July at all...

You are still better off than I am. The last two games of Wings that I played were at Origins 2013 and Origins 2014

Ok, let's see what the Czech comrades will propose and organize.

    There are so many options.

I would recommend a daytrip from Prague to the nearby Castle Karlstein. If you want to smell the medieval times combined with a beautiful landscape this is a perfect choice.

Here is a secret tip (from Watchdog) to test Czech food: U Medvidku http://www.pragueexperience.com/places.asp?PlaceID=1008 (easy to find)

I think you can get online during your working stay in Germany, so we have enogh time to spiking you with good advices.

I do support what Sven wrote about the Czech cuisine, which is unique. The smaller pub you find in Prague, the better food you will be served at lower prices Take it into account while planning the trip, Keith.

Huh? A party in Prague? Cool Hope I will join you too!

Public transport is OK in Prague - left your car in hotel and go by trams and metro.
From these thing that are not above me, I recommend you Kbely Air Museum, National Technical Museum (both mentioned by Steve), a trip by an old tram (1,5$ !), Petřín Hill (very romantic. ZOO is cool - it is at least for half a day, but very nice.
In case you want to leave a Prague, Kutná Hora is a beautiful githic town (1 hour from Prague by a train).

English is OK, especially young people can speak english well.

By the way, my favourite time for Prague Castle is about 22:00 - there are almost no tourists in this time and you can visit Golden Street for free (but it is not possible to visit st. Vitus Cathedral). Guard Parade is at 12:00.
Best time for Charles bridge and Staromestské Square is the same or later - same reason.

How many Czech comrades would join us?

I need to talk to my wife for the (short trip).

If I understand it right: The plan is to come to Prague at 2nd September - play from 12:00h to 21:00h - have a good evening in the city until 02:00 am and leave the 03.09. at noon again.

    Daniel,

Thank you for the information above! Some of those are already on our list and we've actually heard a lot about the zoo from other sources.

I would really enjoy it if we could setup some games a Ladinek's shop to play on the 2nd. Hopefully many of our Czech pilots can attend, it will be my first Wings of Glory game in another country! I think I will bring a couple of my custom painted planes. Cpt. Harry S. Gwinne' N17 for sure:

So if someone wants to work up a mission where I could fly that, that would be great.

I also have another logistic question. We have to get adapters for our US plugs (phones/tablets/computer) to work in Germany, just need to know if those same plugs will work in the Czech Republic?

Had a finally talk with my wife yesterday about this short trip and it seems I have to skip my „WoG travelling engagement“ a little bit.

I have no heavy excuse, but I’m afraid - she’s right - in some points referring to my/our foreign country excursions this year, our plans in September for another holiday week with the kids and my other non-WoG activities this year.

So unfortunately I'm not able to join you in Prague in September.

I hope you understand and please do not be dissapointed. I’ll intercept the Oberst in Nürnberg on his way to the „Golden City“ and hope you will give him a pleasant stay and good games in Prague.

    See you next year, comrades.

Hi guys, especially Keith and Andy.
One week left to our special september meeting. It's high time to make a schedule.

Is it ok for both of you?

It is the right time, Jakub My plan is to arrive to Botel first and then go right to Ladinek's shop.
Is there a chance that one of you guys could pick up Herr Oberst form his hotel? If this is a problem, I'll try to find the hotel and pick the Boss up with my car

Keith, I can be earlier on the 2nd, but not much. 1400 hours is a real time. I'll arrive by car, check in in Botel Racek and then be availabe, so be sure I can get here or there to pick you up from a specific place, like your hotel and drive to the Game Shop and back. I'll PM you with the other important info.
