    Default New Guy

    Hi all,

I'm Kev, I'm from Cheshire, and I'm as green as they come to WoG, came across the game by complete happenstance over the weekend and seeing as I've loved WW1 era planes since playing Red Baron as a kid I thought I'd give this a go and ordered the 'duel' set. Hoping to see if there are any sessions in the Warrington or Liverpool areas, and also to buy a DH2 (personal fave) sometime soon!

    Welcome to the Drome Wingman.
I'm sure that someone here will be able to put you onto a DH2

Dom at Dom's decals certainly had one a few days ago. he is also a member here.

Failing that Keith has them on our own Aerodrome store. See the yellow banner above.

One question you guys might be able to answer actually - aside from the DH2, are there any good minis for a beginner? The 'duel' set I've ordered is the Camel-Dr1 set, maybe a German plane to balance the sides out?

The Halberstadt D.III is probably the best match-up for the DH2 - the DH2 was retired from the Western front very shortly before the Camel entered service, and a couple of months before the Dr.I first appeared, so really you're looking at separate 1 on 1 games, but if you want to ignore the historical service dates and play them together, the Halberstadt D.III ought to work for balanced pairs as well as 1-on-1 against the DH2.

Welcome to the 'drome Kev from a slightly damp East Sussex this evening ! You could get an Eindecker to battle your DH2 as a match up, I'd certainly say jump in and get a Spad V.II & an Alb D.II while they're about, you'll only regret it if you don't !

Another welcome from Sussex. The sun is now shining and it's drying out slowly.

An Albatros D.V would go well with your two as they all flew against each other and there's minis for sale. Then again you'll find every plane is great fun and easy to play in this game.

    Welcome to the Drome.

Thanks for the welcomes guys, looking forward to getting involved, hope the hailstones aren't too much of a misery Womble! I've been searching around on the forum for some regular sessions in north Cheshire, Warrington area preferably, but haven't come across anything. Does anyone know of anything? I found a board game group on meetup that has one or two people who have WoG minis, but nothing more than that.

    Thumbs up

G'day Kev & welcome to the 'drome on behalf of the pilots who fly in NSW down in Australia.
I would definately lash out & grab a DH-2, Halberstadt, Albatross & SPAD VII while you can. You will then be able to progress through early war dogfights to 1918.

Take a look down in the WW1 After Action Reports (Over the Trenches) to see some solo campaigns we play here. When you get comfortable with the rules you might like to join in!

    Welcome Kev, from Bristol.
Reference the early war stuff, as has been stated, have a look at Doms range, Doms Decals, his prices are very reasonable as is the postage rates and I believe he still has the DH2 and Halberstadts in stock.
The only real problem you have here is both those aircraft use the B damage deck, unfortunately with your duel set you have only an A damage deck. To get the other decks you need you have to get a Rules and Accessory pack, which is quite difficult to get hold of at the moment.
Until you do , to simulate the B deck ( A deck twin machine guns, B deck single machine gun) just halve the A damage and round up.
If you get some Eindeckers and Albatross D2 you will see the evolution, Eindeckers, trumped by DH2 which is trumped by the Albatross, Halberstadt is equal, while the Spad 7 will certainly give the Albatross D2 and D5 a run.
Any questions just shout, someone will help out

Just out of curiosity Boney, how come the rules pack is so tough to find right now?

Also thanks again for all the hellos, you're a very welcoming bunch

The worst of it missed us thanks Rob, looks like it went through Brighton and up - I think Ian (Womble) may have got some of it in Worthing; seems that side of the county has been getting a bit of a pasting recently.

Popular game, limited run of rules packs so it's just sold/selling out Kev, have a dig about on t'internet & you may find one at reasonable price though.

Well Kev, I hasten to say here this is my opinion only . First a bit of history so if teaching to suck , sorry.

The game was first introduced as a card game only, even the aircraft were represented by cards, the first set was called Fameous Aces, this gave a few manoeuvre decks , aircraft cards and the A damage deck, the second set published was Watch Your Back, which introduced two seaters with single machine guns, so this set had the B damage deck. We then had two more boxed sets, burning Dragons and Flight of the Giants which gave us the C and D damage decks.
Between Watch your back and Burning Dragons, I believe, miniatures were introduced to play straight from the box and the game really "took off" ( sorry). Things looked good but then Nexus, who published the game folded and we had around a year hiatus until Ares revamped and republished the game under Wings of Glory, this tine though as a miniatures game. Keeping the philosophy of playing straight from the pack.
So to start off new players the Rules and Assessory set was introduced, this had a pretty rule book, all the counters and importantly, all four damage decks.
I suppose that it was thought that old customers, who had bought the old box sets, would not go for the new sets, but looks like they did, nearly all the old players I know bought a new set of the rules, in fact some two sets, double damage decks are really useful in big games. So I think the demand was far greater than was expected. We as a group have attended a number of shows over the past couple of years and promoted our game we like so much and nearly every show I see people leaving us to go buy the game and we have simple exhausted supplies, not completely as Flash has said, but the set is difficult to find at normal prices.
I do believe the set is to be reprinted but I don't know when, others will be able to help here no doubt.
Apologies for going on and as I said this my opinion only, if I'm wrong I sure someone will point it out.
Enjoy the game Kev, it really is a good one.

    Excellent suggestion Winco!
May I suggest MrKev trying 12-7 games in the US. They did have some a while back.
