Thread: I am the Walrus!

  1. #1

    Default I am the Walrus!

    Siting in an English garden...

There's a plane here, but is it the walrus?

This is my first WW2 paper model in 1/200 scale. Tiiiiiiny!!!
It's an amazing little model, if not easy to build.
I promised it to Rob and if he finds it decent enough - off he goes to Malta. Saving pilots he will.

I got scared at the beginning - it has an interior carenage to support the plane.

    It is small.

Then I dressed it and became an aquatic mammal.

Powered with a radial engine - grass free!

And suddenly it only needs the floaters and detail paint.

But that's tomorrow! My eyes hurt...

    I am the Walrus!

    Cu-cu-cu-chu!

Thanks for the trouble you have taken with this Quim. It is just what I was looking for.

Great Quim, but that's a long way round to get from Lisbon to Malta.

    very nice
Here is my effort from about 5 years ago with the same kit (I think) rescaled to 1/144 that I then went on to use as a master for casting.
Also, someone made a very nice diorama out of it too!

    Thanks, my friends.

In fact the cylinders were the most easy thing to do, Karl. The original were very flat so I cut the cylinders from a toothpick. Now I only have to paint them.

I love the drawings Nicolas. I've researched photos, but didn't though of those.

Peter, I would love to see those pictures.

    Yes Nick, you can.
The best paper weight for this small models is 80 to 120 gr. I use 110 gr. normal paper.

The Warlus took off. His first flight was a complete success!

Because we do care, Squadron Leader Joachim Lisbon and Pilot Officer Andrzej Oppeln escorted the flying sea mammal.

A spray of varnish and off he'll go. Carrying Japanese warriors to Malta?!

I had to do the same thing with all the pictures for my "How Toos" after the great hack.

I am totally over the moon with it.
My squadron is unknown as the Walrus's seemed to come and go from Malta so the one for the Eagle is as good as any.

700 Squadron out of RN Air Station Aboukir was painted in desert camo?

Damn, damn, damn, damn....and damn. Ok, Joaquim....it's all your fault! Cocktail sticks, damn good idea if you have microscopic eyesight and tweezers that super glue won't stick to fingers! Now I have an engine assembly stuck to my thumb for the sixth time! I knew I should have stuck to cardboard.

    Happy birthday, my friend!
I need photos of your work to be able to help you.
I only use superglue to strengthen small fragile things, or to glue metal and plastic to paper. Wood and paper I always glue with good PVA glue.
Use tweezers to hold the small cylinder part, put some pva glue and its done.

Would this be a bad time to mention that besides obvious things like air sea rescue, the Walrus was occasionally used as a dive bomber...? (Mainly by the Brits in North Africa, and by the Aussies in New Guinea....) So go on, have three....

I think more 45 degrees than 90, but a proper for real no **** dive bomber. Utter madness of course, but it seems to have worked....
