Thread: Wintercon 2014

    Default Wintercon 2014

Maybe it was the cold (minus 5 temperature in the hall till the heaters started working) .. or the uncertainty about the economy... but attendance at Wintercon was well down on last year - perhaps 2/3 as many attended.

However, that picture was only taken after nearly everyone else had left. At one stage we had a record 9 players with planes on the table at once, which can get a bit crowded on a 6x4 ft area...

    3 Fokker D.VIIs, 1 Halberstadt CL.II, 1 F2B, 2 Camels, a Snipe, and an O/400. 4 of the players hadn't played before.

Even 4 aircraft (the usual) led to some interesting situations. Here we see a US DH4 being pursued by a Fokker D.VII, in turn pursued by a US Spad VII , with a Pfalz D.XII hot on its tail.

Looking at all that lovely blue space behind you makes me think of an enormous Zeppelin game....

Sad that numbers were down, but you had a fun time regardless, and thats the main thing

Even with the numbers down you scooped up four non players and gave them a taste of battle - not shabby at all !

    Thumbs up

    Well done Zoe!
Wish I could have been there!

Shame about the attendance, but it's good you had a good set of games.

Looks like a nice little dog-fight. Glad you all had fun. Keep the recruiting going.

Quality beats quantity any time. (yes and I'm sure we all now the soviet response too).

That said well done for keeping the momentum going and four new players to boot.

    Nicely done, Neil

Well done, 4 new players is good. So what was the outcome of the foursome? Looks like it would have been fun to play out.

Oh, we had more than 4 new players. We had 4 just in that one game... about 10 all told.

As you can see, the place had rather more people in an hour earlier than that photo of mine indicated.

Here's a snapshot of the 9-plane fight, 2 Fokker D.VIIs just off frame.

One canny RAF player took to keeping his Bristol Fighter low over friendly trenches. His 2-gun observer could fire on any attackers, who'd take damage from ground fire.
So I sent in an AEG G.IVk armoured bomber, that was less susceptible to ground-fire... the forward sponson 20mm got him.

Thanks for giving us a flavour of the show Zoe.
I can now see why it's called Wintercon.
