Thread: Pour me a Ju 88 A 4 please!

    Default Pour me a Ju 88 A 4 please!

I know these are available elsewhere and lots nicer, but hey I have no patience and a lot of wood and resin! After an hour in the wood shop this guy emerged . . .

After dinner he will get a coat of CA and a lot of scoring for control surfaces, cowl flaps and panel lines, then we will try the glazing frames . . .

Step two was to fill, sand, finish the wooden master

Control outlines and details were added and several coats of high gloss clear added

Sitting on the scale drawings to check dimensions

Bass wood finishes nicely and from my previous efforts I discovered the plastic tail planes needed to be made from thicker material and airfoiled

    Ventral gun position

Frog eye twin gun stations were added to rear canopy

Cowl and parting lines scribed in before the finish, may have to redo . . .

    Engine exhausts added

Next to a FW 190 D for size

Time so far on task was 3 hours . . . now for the mold.

    So lets get crazy . . .

If a guy had a lot of Ju88's he could get into a lot of trouble : )

    Just kidding! Am I?

    Time for bed . . .

So two Ju88's got caught lurking on my bench . . . you know where this can lead . . .

Noses "clipped" and trued up . . .

    One will get a Me-109 and the other a Fw-190, if I only had a pair . . . oh I do!

Making of the warheads from a length of 3/8" dowel . . .

    A bit of fine carving . . . sanding . . .

    A pre-check of the nose units . . .

    And a bit of glue . . .

The Me 109 combo ready to join, looking at a iron set of struts on the Ju88 and a micro magnet on the fighters for releasing in flight . . .

And my own Fw 190 cast will accompany the modern rudder Ju88

Now to the paint shop . . .

  15. #15

    Default

    okay, ready for the trapeze!

Wire trapeze formed and secured to the Ju88, micro magnet to the belly of the fighter

Close up on the wire, formed to give as much landing area for the magnet as possible

    And the test . . .

    Removes quite nicely!

My micro mounting balls on both units . . .

    Now we are talking!

    Bomber's Away!

This will make the card genius's happy!

Mrs Clipper's quilting is starting to encroach the Luftwaffe testing area . . .

Now for some serious painting, elves! Leave those quilt bits alone!

I was wondering when you'd make a Mistel. And casting Fw-190s too!

I have found carving one master model and detailing it out is faster and I can then pour as many others as I want. Much better than carving and re-carving each model, proving you can teach an old dog new tricks! Next up are some Fairey Albacores, Fulmars and my version of a Martin B-26 . . .

Nothing that Dave does now really amazes me any more Eric. I'm starting to think that he and his Elves could walk on water if he set his mind to it.

The cards are coming together, but it would be helpful to have units and names?

The Bf.109G-2 set is a Mistel 2, and the FW.190A-8 set is a Mistel 3, right? Are there any differences in the Ju.88s' performance? One is an A4 and one is a G1, depending on the versions you are doing.

    Dave,
The complete three-card set for Fw Rudi Riedl's Mistel Red 12 is now in my new album: German Oddities

I will match your paint schemes and planes shortly. It would be nice to have units and name, though, if you have them.

Do you need a management card for the Ju88?

What unit(s) are you looking for, if a card were to show up?

Any card would do but strange to say it is for Regia Aeronautica 102 Gruppo Ba'T. No crew details are needed. It's the usual green camo with the three axes for the Roundel.

    Rob,
I know I read that some Italians flew [Ju88s - not!] Bf-110s as night fighters. I can't remember where. I can only find Ju87s in 102 Gruppo. I'll get back to you soonest, if I can find the unit.

I don't want to put you to all this trouble.
Just a generic card would do fine.

The reference I used had the German crosses painted out in Italian middle green, and the white fuselage band and rudder cross added. The Italian markings were on the lower wings only, until a bit later. Unit and plane markings were on the fuselage, but not visible in the overhead view.

The forward Firing Arc is for both upper and lower guns, as is the rear Firing Arc. The crew is listed as:
    4 (pilot, bombardier/front gunner, radio operator/rear gunner, navigator/ventral gunner)
I'm not sure, but it appears that at least three of the guns could be fired simultaneously, as there are two ventral guns, front and rear. The bombardier would handle either front gun, depending on where the target was. The rear was defended by two gunners, and therefor you could shoot at upper and lower targets.

Hope this works for you, but almost any suggestions can be implemented.

Looks the Bee's knees to me Mike.
The only difference I can see is that mine has the top wings too.
No matter however, I love it.
