On 1 June 1941, two Ju-88 bombers of II/LG1 attacked and sunk the HMS Calcutta in the Eastern Mediterranean. The Calcutta, under the command of Capt. Dennis Marescaux Lees, was sailing with HMS Coventry to provide anti-aircraft protection for ships evacuating troops from Sphakia, Crete. Two bombs struck her, and she sunk a few minutes later at 9:45 a.m., approximately 100 nautical miles West-Northwest of Alexandria, Egypt. She lost 118 crewmembers, with the remaining 255 survivors rescued by the Coventry.
