Lightbulb A fun game part 3!

On Sunday the second day of the airshow i set up and continued the last phase of of the game we played Saturday.

Objectives: German. The discovery of a second line of radar stations prompted a change n German attack planning. With the destruction of this site as primary and air bases as the secondary target.

RAF. The loss of coastal radar has degraded reaction time for fighters. The secondary system must be protected. Due to earlier losses fighter strength is down.

Forces: German. Three HE-111`s with two ME-109`s for close escort. Two ME-110`s as flank roving escort.

RAF. Two Hurricanes and a single Spitfire are available at start of game. Reinforcements may appear based on time delayed rolls.

Special rules. Altitude rules were not used. All collisions draw a "A" chip. For each base to base contact, regardless aircraft nationality.
The ME-109`s were under the slow movement. Rule after initiation of fast speed they had ten turns of combat.
All pilots had a chance to survive a planes destruction. 1-4 on a six sided dice saved the pilot.

A destroyed RAF fighter with a pilot survivor roll. Could roll for his return in a new plane. An RAF plane returned to an airfield also diced for a return.

The Germans started two firing sticks back from radar site. They sacrificed bomb load for speed allowing for high speed movement. The 110`s were left and right of the bombers with the 109`s behind trying to conceal themselves and act as the final blow to any enemy fighters. The RAF fighter started over their own airfields.

The Spit fires were considered the real threat to the bombers and the 110`s shifted met them the Hurricane after a slow start maneuvered for a side attack.

The action started with the a head on pass between the Spit and the left flanking 110. The Spit came out smoking and damage to both planes the next turn found the in collision. Which jammed the right rudder on the Spit and knocked the the 110 hard. In the center the 110 and Hurricane have exchanged long range shots. The next turn the 110 had no firing arc and Hurricane the lead 111 exchanged long range fire. The trialing 109`s were trying to maneuver the bombers and attack Spitfire only to see it side slip directly in front of a 11 at short range. The middle hurricane rammed the lead 111. The start of a general bump and go fest. The out flanking 110 pulled an Immelman in the movement phase.

The Spitfire found himself in short range of two 111 and a long range from the 110 in the firing. The Hurricane exchanged a close shot with so far untouched 111 and received rear shot from the 110. This resulted in engine damage to the Hurricane and a general beating up of the Spit ncluding engine damage. The 111`stook damage but nothing serious.

The next movements were plotted. and 1 pm arrived.

Intermission with back ground music from a big band. At this point the game was suspended for the air show. I had to take some more photos!

The next movement phase saw an Immelman by the out of position 110. The hurricane made a left turn directly in to the trailing 111. The Spitfire turned left and rammed two 111`s. The right hand 109 rammed the left hand 111. The whole scene was a jumble cards and basses. In the end both the Spit and Hurricane went down from firing and damage from the ramming s. The 111 were smoking and battered but still flying. The unlucky 109 needed to go home with engine damage. The lone Hurricane had long range shot at the flank 111. A long rang shot from the 110 damaged his engine and pilot. Both the Spit and the Hurricanes pilot survived.

Reinforcements were rolled for and three turns would see the Hurricanes return and the Spit in four.

The last turn was anti climatic the 110 finished off the Hurricane and damage was drawn for the radar site. It took all three 111`s but the site was knocked out. The Germans turned for home the job done.

Conclusion: The Germans limped home with over half or more damage to all three HE-111`s. Two shot up ME-110`s, a crippled ME-109 and a untouched ME-109. The radar site was disabled. The air clear of the RAF. They declared decisive victory and reported shooting down six fighters without a loss of their own. For the two days they were the victors.

I ended up soloing this game. It started at 9:30 am with a break at 1:00 pm. After the flying i finished the last two turns and started cleanup. I had expectations of seeing some friends show up. I had a great day i talked to dozens of people and answered questions, all while slowly plotting, moving and firing. The delay between some plotting and moving did make for some interesting actions.

I want to thank the Military Aviation Museum for allowing me to present these games.

Love the 110's. Are you using 1/144th scale? If so where did you get the 110's?
See you on the Dark Side......

They are 144 scale kits from Minicraft. I have one or two more to build! They have a undeserved reputation.

    Nice report again, Richard.

Again - not an easy job for the RAF.

Seems the best tactics would be - wait for reinforcements and make a massive attack on a flank of the Luftwaffe formation.

Frontal attacks of single planes were suicide commandos.

You are correct on all points. What hurt the RAF, was the loss of so many pilots in the second game. They lost more there than the the Germans did in all three games!

Nice looking set up Richard. I must admit that I'm beginning to admire those larger formations of German bombers.

They make movement so much easier. Trying to move three or four bombers on individual bases is tiresome. One player can control two or three basses. All you really need is one control card for each base. I kept the damage for each plane separate on an unused board. I have single basses to use for stragglers or lone survivors. So far there has been no need for them. I could not find any of the photo frames i had used for my earlier bases. I now have a few to make some more!
