Lightbulb A fun game part 2!

With the conclusion of game one. More players joined in and the second game began.

Objectives: German, knock out coastal radar station. Secondary attack RAF airfields.

RAF, shoot down as many German aircraft as possible and defend radar stations and airfields.

Forces: German, three fully loaded HE-111`s restricted to slow speed to speed until bomb release. Three ME-110`s no restrictions.

RAF, the four Spitfires and four Hurricanes were available. Two of each started the game, the rest acted as a reserve.

Special rules: Every RAF pilot shot down over land had rolled a six sided die, 1-4 meant survival.
Any plane lost over the channel the pilot needed a 1-3 roll to survive.
No altitude rules were used, since this was a introductory game.
Any base to base contact caused an "A" chip damage for all parties.

The HE`s started two firing sticks from the target radar station. The 110`s moving slow stuck close to the bombers. The defenders came off their airfields fast and furious. The bombers droned across the table with only minor damaged suffered, when one 110 moved through the bombers. The battle took place over the channel with damage to all fighters my own 110 suffered more from bumping a Spitfire than from his guns. I did manage to drop the Spit from fire from the rear gunner. The Spitfire pilot did not get out. This was on the right side of the bomber formation. On the left another 110 i commanded brought down a Hurricane, with the loss of this pilot also. In the center the other 110 and the bombers crippled and brought down the other RAF fighters. They also went down with their planes. The bombers had taken damage but were still coming on. The reserve RAF fighter started in one of these were shot down with the loss of the pilot.
The game was suspended for the main action of the air show. All players agreed to return and finish the game. After the show, i was the only person to come back to the game.
I soloed the bombers in to the radar station. By the point of bomb release. One HE had 15 hit points left and one dead pilot. Another had 10 damage and one engine hit. The last was barley damaged with only 5 hits. One Me-110 had gone down with the crew picked up. They say Canada is lovely this time of year! The other two 110`s were both flying but down one hit point each. The bombing was worse than the Stukas in the first attack. Yes there are more "0" chips in mix than boom chips. I am certain had six more German bombers hit that target, they would have missed also. The 110`s strafed the radar and inflicted the minimum to disable it. The RAF was rallying it`s forces but four turns would pass before their arrival. The game was called at 5pm closing time for the museum.

In the end the German`s achieved a marginal victory. With the loss of one plane and crew, against five RAF aircraft and crew. The loss of a single Radar site was not a disaster. The next attack will find a hole in the chain!

The next mission will feature one German bomb ordnance specialist in each bomber. The can check the fuses on the way down!

An interesting game Rich and very similar to our Chip Shop raid. You did about as well on the actual raid if you count the radar as the Chip Shop. Marginally better on shooting down the British planes though. That could just be the luck of the cards.

Thank you. The RAF fighters took a beating in the one pass they made on the bombers. Instead of breaking away they went right into the fire of all three bombers. The 110`s picked up the pieces!

Getting shot down was my own fault. I really thought those He 111's would move faster. My plan was sound, but my execution was lacking. And for the record my 303rd squadron Spitfire did get significant gun hits on the Me 110 (along with one collision damage -- I recall getting the plane down to 1 hit point before flying behind the 110 (and in front of the 111 flight) and getting shot to pieces.

I had fun, especially playing at such a full table in a great setting (I have wanted to play WoG or some other miniatures game since the first time I stepped in the Military Aviation Museum). I'll get my revenge at Guns of August.

You are correct both of my 110`s were flying wrecks! Jonathan has asked to come back and run some more games. I of course am jumping at the chance!

Great game there Richard a pity it was left to you to conclude after the main show event. For our chip shop raid at SALUTE we had 3 JU87's, 6 Heinkel III's, 3 ME110's and 3 ME109's. Not all at once. Facing 3 Hurricane's, 2 Spitfires and a Westland Whirlwind. All but 1 ME109 were shot down, the last Heinkel bombed the chip shop then crashed into it when shot down! The RAF lost the Whirlwind, 3 Spits and 2 Hurricane's if I remember right.
See you on the Dark Side......

As Rob said a very similar game. The fact i ended the game alone was not important. The first to sessions had eight different players not counting myself. They ranged from 15 to 50 in age. They would try the game and go watch some great planes fly. One young man started the day with a ride in a Sterman. He played in both games and left thinking about coming up to our August convention! As we played visitors would watch and ask question. After the flying the museums owner stopped by and asked some questions he left with information on the Aerodrome and the WOG itself. He also pointed at the a Spit and a Hurricane and said, I think i will go fly a real one! I told him to have fun. He said he would! He went out and strapped himself into the P-51, he took off and had fun!

P.S. Two pilots from the show. Pilot in green is the museums owner.

    Great second AAR, Richard.

Never thought the RAF would get so much trouble with the Luftwaffe. (5:1 for Germany )

On the other hand, they encountered a massive formation with many hitpoints.

I have no smart solution for this situation.

Hard to stop the bombers with an frontal attack or stop them anyways before they reach the target.

Maybe an combined attack on one site of the formation and knock out one enemy after the other...

You had it right you try to hit them on the flank, or both flanks if possible.
