    Guns Of August 2014

GOA is being held in Holiday Inn Patriot in Williamsburg, Virginia. GOA is a fun small con with a full range of gaming events. For those who live in the fast lane BARN BURNERS SLOT CAR CLUB, will be back. The February featured three WOG events and three non WOG air events. The Saturday night charity raffle is always interesting, and a free Flea market Sunday morning! If you do not see a game you like, there is normally a table or two open for pick up games.

P.S. BobP and his wife will the special guests for this years GOA!

Thanks for the notoriety and looking forward to getting together again. Hope Lou (STEEL LEGION) can be there again. As for the B-29's how about they fly and have a P-51 escort. The escorts run by a player and the bombers sort of on auto pilot.

Luck had nothing to do with that notoriety! It is a high honor, not as much as a Sail of Glory set , but close! I missed the talk by the P-51 pilot at the show, did you catch i? That is as a deal i want to fly a fighter for a change. The B-29`s can actually fly fast with a bomb load!
I just had an idea for my second game. There is more than one way to attack Japan in 1945! Pilots man your planes! That or North Africa?

I caught the last 10 minutes of Jerry Yellin's talk. He is an exceptionally spry 90 year old. He told the very interesting story of how he was invited to Japan in the mid 1980s and refused to go -- his wife vetoed him -- and how that led to his family uniting with a Japanese family. After much hesitation by both families, Yellin's son married a Japanese woman. The turning point for the woman's father was learning Jerry Yellin's past as a P-51 pilot who flew over Japan. The father's rationale was that any American who flew a fighter plane over Japan was a man of courage, and the father wanted the blood of that courageous pilot to flow through the veins of his grandchildren. So the marriage came to pass.

I believe Mr. Yellin tells the full story in his book Of War and Weddings: A Legacy of Two Fathers which is available at Amazon.

I read a brief outline on him and wanted to here him. I am sorry i missed it. I thought it 1 Sunday and found out it was at 12. I was in the lobby talking to visitors about the game. It was a great weekend!

Went away last Thursday and now back and catching up. I didn't hear the talk but have to pay more attention to those things. They have great stories to tell.

Game planning. I need to register my GOA events. I will run some B-29 missions on Friday night a 6pm both unescorted and escorted. Saturday morning at 8am i was considering carrier operations against mainland Japan. That leaves the possibility of Saturday at 6pm. Here are three options.

1: Repeat Friday nights with the variation missions and defenders.

2: Something totally different early North Africa. Those CR-42`s should ready by then!

3: Battle of Britain, at a record of 2 looses and no wins the RAF`s luck has to improve!

If there are any other suggestions, the floor is open for discussion!

I do tend to get sucked into other games on Saturday night, but I would love to play some American Volunteer Group scenarios.

Whatever you come up with will be fun. North Africa/Malta would be different.

I certainly have a vested interest in seeing any N Africa/ Malta pictures you may take Rich if you choose that scenario.

Looks like FOK has voiced his opinion. I have the SM79's for a convoy attack and I am sure there will be some CR42's ready for action. Brings up a number of possibilities for games.

I too would love to see a convoy attack, the Malta run, Op Pedestal, something along those lines.

So many ideas coming up for games. Maybe you should reserve a few hours of gaming time for all the ideas that are being thrown out.

Richard apart from the 15 merchant ships being attacked all the way. You also have the covering force with carriers, or you could concentrate on the Ohio, without it getting into harbour Malta might just have fallen. Decks awash, crashed enemy aircraft on deck, hull holed, lashed to two destroyers...what a mission to get her into Valetta safe and sound again.

I might have to watch the MALTA STORY this weekend with all this Malta talk. Good movie. Not much battle action but good movie.

I read up on that too late last night. I tried to remember that Ohio was in that convoy. I might change my mind and run two sessions on Saturday based on Pedestal.
A variety of aircraft to fly. I was amazed to see the Fulmar on the TOE. I had thought the Seafire and Martlet had replaced them by mid 1942.

Even I am struggling to do the covering force for Pedestal Rich. Although Neil has made me a present of enough Merchantmen to complete the convoy, I only have three Carriers, and nowhere enough Destroyers. Also there is the problem of finding a supplier of Fulmars in 1/200 scale.
They are also the only aircraft together with a Walrus, that I can't get for the Malta defences.

All my fleet have paper hulls, they print up easy! As for the Fulmar i have never wanted to spend $30 on a 144 scale. Peter makes a nice looking 144 scale Walrus, one of these days i will order some Beauforts and order one.

Or small-scale-portable-stable-wormholes-devices. That would also do the trick.
I could attend to all the interesting events around the world...

Last Fulmars were delivered in Feb. '43; last operational flight was 8 Feb '45 -- and ended in a crash into the safety barrier which wrote off the unit.

Finally registered my events. Friday night a 6pm B-29`s over Japan. Saturday at 8am and 6pm Malta and the Med. The later will be a series of scenarios inspired by the Defense of Malta and Operation Pedestal. Come on down and fly a plane or two!

These received the most feedback on the Aerodrome and from friends!

    Feel Free Rich.
My book on Pedestal may help.
Don't forget that Neil has most of the ships on cards here on the site. Also he is no slouch on information about Malta.
