Thread: What do you own?

  1. #1

    Default What do you own?

I am curious how big people’s forces are. Currently I own a Spitfire, FW190 and a Yak. I am just starting my forces.

This is what I am aiming for when the models are released:
    2 Spitfires
    1 Hurricane
    1 Beaufighter
    1 Lancaster
    1 Gladiator

    2 BF109
    2 JU87
    1 FW190
    1 HE111
    1 BF110

    2 Yak-1

What does everyone else own or want to own? How big are your games?

    Paul.

    Hi Paul,
I cannot easily name the planes I have, but I can see that you and I seem to both concentrate on the European theatre. In addition to the Ares' models, I have some Italian planes (two C.200's and an SM.79) I ordered from Armaments In Miniature and painted myself.

The games I have run at conventions have varied between four and six to a side. Check out the After Action Report section to get a direct look at what people's (including mine) games look like.

    Paul,
My 1/200 scale inventory list is pretty long...
    1. All things Nexus, many doubled and tripled, some repainted, some never used in play...
    2. Almost all Ares models, except some Bf 110 (have 3 AIM ones instead) and black Beau. 12-16 AIM Kates, Hayabusas, Spits V, Shapeways PZL P-11s, Ratas...many.

I think for some a better question would be what don't you have. I have all the WWII planes with quite a few doubles and even triples of some. So in total I would have to say about 110 models. (that's just WWII).

    Paul;
I'm not sure how typical the average WGS gamer is compared to the members here (esp. the ones that post a lot).
From my direct experience, both with my collection (where the inventory vs. playing time ratio is quite abysmal) and others in the Ohio Squadron, this game takes a life of it's own.
I have a fairly large collection of both WW1 and WW2, Nexus and Ares with lots of duplications for repainting, plus Shapeways. My intent is to have flights/schwarms and even squadron/Jasta level units.
Is this practical from a game aspect; probably not.
The key is to find your own level of interest, and go with it.

Paul best to pick a theater of operations that you are interested in and concentrate on that. I was lucky in that I already had a quantity of 1/144th scale WW2 models (all Battle of Britain) and then got into the pacific theatre with the official WGS mini's, now expanded to include about 16 aircraft from AIM.

Take Neils advice pick a theater a an average game should have 6-8 planes. I was collecting 144 planes before DOW came out and have close to 400 planes. For all theaters. I run fairly large games for six or more players. I also en courage a player to fly two planes. Here are some photos from convention games. Check out my albums for past game photos.

Rich, you must have a lot maneuver decks. Are they from the original Wings of Wars?

It seems strange that you could buy additional maneuver decks and plane stat cards previously and now you can't for the current game. Why?

It is tied up in the companies that produce the game. A company called Nexus formerly produced the game (through 2011 IIRC). Nexus sold the plane models, but also sold the plane stat cards and maneuver decks without the models. The current company Ares produces the game to include the plane models only (I believe the models are a better money maker).

Wings of War started out as a card game - the models came along later.
The maneuver decks were only available in the box sets - Famous Aces, Watch Your Back, Burning Drachens and Flight of the Giants, and in the booster packs, where you got two or three decks matched to the plane cards included in the booster.
Unfortunately, the decks were not available separately.

What do you do if you have planes that you don't own decks for? Or that a question that can't be officially asked here?

David and Tim are correct. What started out as a card game under the original manufacturer has become a miniature game.
To answer your question i have several decks of cards. In my collection are two sets each Dawn of WW2 the original set that came with maneuver decks and plane cards. Two Fire From the Sky sets this also had maneuver decks and plane cards. Three sets each of Spitfire and ME-109 Squadron packs. Two each of the Last Biplanes and Revolution in the Air Squadron packs. The squadron packs had maneuver decks and plane cards. Plus the new set that is only rules and game chips.
You still see all of the old set listed on E-Bay occasionally. Check out the link!

    Paul

Enjoy WOG. I had not played a non computer war game in years before DOW was released. I only had around 50 144 scale planes at that time. My collection has grown with expansion into different theaters. It started with the BOB, six out of my last ten convention games have been in the South West Pacific. The B-29`s are for a game in August!

So far, one of every official release--I'm more collector than player, since most LGS's in this area only have table space for Pokemon, Magic, L5R and Warhammer, and the exceptions are well scattered enough to not be non-driver friendly, or in bad parts of town.

I do not think it is the number of minatures you have that matters so long as you are having fun playing with them (or collecting them).

Paul I live in Toowooba. We have a group of friends who meet every thursday night and play a wide selection of historical games. At the moment Flames of War (which I do not like) SAGA, Muskets and Tomahaks and Dead mans Hand (the latter being all 28mm) are the most popular and every third thursday WW1 WoG (I have still got to get the group into 28mm).

Doug, my club plays lots of games (40K, Warhammer, Warmachine, Boardgames, X Wing, Bolt Action which I love) and I am trying to get people to play WGS. There is 2 of us playing WGS so far, with a couple of other guys that have had a game or 2.

I have just ordered a few more planes. I decided to stick with the current WGS models for ease of purchase. It will bring my total to:

    2 Spitfire Mk.IX
    1 Gladiator

    2 Yak-1

    2 FW190
    1 HE111

That should keep me happy for a while as I can now field up to 3 British (one is a biplane) or 3 German planes at once.
