Thread: 1/144 Valom kits

    Default 1/144 Valom kits

Has anyone here put together one or two of these kits yet and like to comment about them?

I read an online review and the author said they were nice kits for their size.

I find the Sopwith Pup and the SE5a very appealing, but before I splurge on a couple of packs of each, I would like to here what anyone else on this forum thought of them.

I see that the struts and undercart frames and in the case of the SE5a the Lewis are Photo-etched which should look good.

    Roger out!

Hi Trevor.I have put together a couple of these models, they are well cast, but a bit fiddly to construct.Patience & a pair of tweezers help, The photo etch pieces are stronger than I thought they would be before I handled them. The gun is a bit of a problem on my kit the photo etch had not formed on the gun bracket for the top wing on the SE5, so I uses fine brass wire.this seems ok, The gun itself has to be folded back on itself, both of mine broke, but they glue back together ? look rather lethal. Now for the paint job,Were did I put those Pesky brushes !!! ?

    Thanks Wingman!
They were indeed a bit fiddly, but once I got the hang of it they went together nicely.
The photo etch struts are easily strong enough on the DVIIs, but I didn't bother with the control column or cockpit levers - placing a Reviresco pilot figure in the cockpit negated the need for any of these parts.
Also, the tail skid provided in the kit is a photo etch part which is designed to fold together before placement; a bit over-the-top I thought! I replaced it with the cut-off end of one of the staples which held the Reviresco pilot bag closed!

The lozenge decals are apllied so nicely... I have these kits, but they are still shelved, waiting for some illumination how to make them!

Now that I know what I'm doing with these kits, I intend to post a step-by-step of the next one (when I find the FZ"£$%^ data card for my camera! )

I'm in the process of putting together the DVII, the Albatros, and the Nieuport - they're going together nicely. It's just getting used to building a model in 1/144th scale that's different (but definitely do-able). I'm using your idea, too, Tim, and canning the cockpit detail in favor of a pilot figure taking up the space. While I haven't attached wings yet, I plan on using the photo-etched struts on these first builds - if they don't work to my satisfaction, I'll find replacements. Options for that have been discussed elsewhere on the forum and are easy to find. But I really DO like the options Valom provides one with in the case of extra decals and options...:-)

The SE5a and Pup are on my future Valom order sheet...!

    All the best,
    Matt Materne

I really like the fuselage on the brown Udet. How did you do that? It looks like real wood.

Phil, the technique uses both acrylic paints and oil paints - it is a little time consuming but if you want to see how its done I did a 'How To' here.

Im using a 1/32 scale model to show you how its done, however its the exact same process for 1/144 but with much finer lines and later down the thread I show how its done on a Shapeways model.
