Default Series V and B-25 C action in Zirndorf

Series V and B-25 C action in Zirndorf

A few weeks ago we had a nice game with the new WGS Series V fighters.

With seven players we decided to add a medium bomber to the Allied side.

We played with altitude rules. Aim bonus for firing from above and continuous fire from fighters. Bomber gunners had no aim bonus (traditional house rule). We used the acceleration and crew damage optional rules.

The medium bomber was a B-25C Mitchell escorted by two P-51Ds and a Spitfire IX.

Gaming area were two gaming mats put together at the long side (city & coast).

The target was a bridge from the Rules & Accessoires pack in the costal city.

All planes started at level 4.

The defenders were two Focke-Wulf 190Ds and a Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate

I commanded the Mitchell bomber and let the comrades fly the fighters.

One of the Focke Wulf pilots (Markus - Czech & Polish comrades know him from the last SummerCon) and the Nakajima pilot were experienced WoG players and stayed together.

The passed the intercepting P-51Ds and shot the same time at my Mitchel (still at level 4).

The Focke-Wulf attacked from a level below (3). The Nakajima from the same altitude (4).

Like said before, they were veterans and expected the bomber to dive away.

So I catched BCC from the Jap and AC from the German.

    The Axis drawed first.
The FW received an A-damage from the frontal gunner and an A-Damage from the turret below.
The Jap received a B-damage from the upper turret.

Both were on fire! (You can imagine my dirty laugh)

…unfortunately the damage they dealt out, killed the gunners in the upper and lower turret.
    (optinal crew damage)

With the escorts far away, the burning Axis planes finished off my Mitchell very quick.

Because of their good planed turns and attacks from different altitude levels, my bomber has no chance to make it to the city.

The comrades continued to fight and the P-51Ds did a great job and shot down the (not burning) FW.

The burning FW was that badly damaged by fire, that a single long range AB damage from a P-51D sent it to the ground.

We decided to end the first game at this point.

    Result and impressions:

    • The boys need to train escort missions!
    • The new series V planes are deadly versus medium bombers. We need the heavy bombers!
    • The Jap pilot used his good climb abilities very good. The KI-84 is hard to kill.
    • Unfortunately the Spitfire pilot wasn’t able to use the potential of his planes. He didn’t received damage, but dealt out damage only once, too.
    • Optional crew damage is nasty. Especially for the B-25C with 4+ crew members.

We changed sides and the former Spitfire IX pilot volunteered to fly the B-25 now.

Target was a bridge in the town on the city map.

Beer was essential to keep the moral high!

We used collision rules, the boys cared for it and passed each other in respectful distance.

I commanded the KI-84 know and we were able to break through to the bomber very easy.

Unfortunately the Mitchell dived away, so we caused only light damage.

I did my best to follow the bomber on his way to the bride, ignoring the Spitfire IX on my six.

    Bombs away.

Not a 100% hit, but we counted it as a succesful bombing.

    We reached meanwhile level 2.

My Nakajima collected hits from the bomber and the nearby Spitfire IX.

    Finally I was shot down.

The P-51s took out one of the Focke –Wulfs and crippled the remaining one.

This one was on the retreat at level 1, when the crippled bomber crossed it’s flight path.

So the B-25C did’n’t make it back to the home base, too.

    Result:

    • Some of us are better bomber pilots then fighter pilots.
    • To shake off one of the new fast series V fighters is not possible, even with a fast medium bomber.
    • We need to develop better escort tactics.

    Very interesting Sven.
Both raids were very instructive and you succinct appraisal at the end of both missions makes me think that:-

    (a) I need to swap to night time raids.
    (b) I really need Mosquitoes, to draw off the fighters.

2-3 medium bombers acting in concert. With perhaps 1-2 escorts?

Great AAR! Can't wait for you to get out here and get some more practice in bomber escort duty.

    Thumbs up

Looked like all the lads enjoyed those two games Sven & the beer was well deserved!

Sounds like we need at least two Bombers to give any real chance of a successful mission.
