Thread: Yorkshire Air Museum

    Cool Yorkshire Air Museum

During my holiday in York, England, I visited Yorkshire Air Museum near the town. The museum is located in old airbase of bomber squadron. The greatest asset of the museum is that you can see how pilot, mechanics and other staff lived during the WWII.
You can see here Spitfire, Hurricane (both laminated models 1:1), Halifax, Bf.109, Mosquito, DC-3 ,three Bucaneers, two Tornados, Lightning, Harrier and many, many others.
Please, let us invite you to a virtual tour of this great museum in my gallery. I am uploading some photos here too.

    Nice pictures, Dan-Sam.

That Halifax bomber in the hangar has an impressive statistic.

This is one of many reasons why I like UK - many (not only air) museums for fine entrance fee
By the way - there were many men around planes. Too many for full time job. As former scout leader, I know very well the cost of volunteering, so let's raise our glasses for those, who are giving their time, energy and sometimes even money for something reasonable

if you are back on these shores again and in the London area I would heartily recommend a trip to the Brooklands museum. as well as the racing cars, bikes and busses (and the old banked motor racing circuit track) they have an impressive collection of aircraft, including the Wellington that was recovered from Loch Ness some years ago. As with Elvington many of the staff there are volunteers, old chaps and ladies who used to work at Brooklands when the site was a hub of the aerospace industry, so they have a particular connection to the aircraft that are there.

The nose is from the very first Halifax who finish its campaign - 128 air raids over Europe. If I remember well, it was from No. 158th (French) Squadron. The rest of Halifax is painted as this memorable.

I must remember it, thank you. I think I read about the Wellington a year ago - the only one on the world? I like British love to their air history. Here are only one big museum (Prague - Kbely) and some smaller (Vyškov, Olomouc), but mostly with Cold war machines. A big for British air museums.

    Noted.
In two weeks I am in London. Is there any public transportation/connection you could recommend, David?
