"Before there were Fighters."
It had been a totally uneventful patrol for Sub Lt. Mitchell and Sgt Wilkins the pilot of the BE2c. True the cold of the December day had eaten into their bones, and left them as cold as corpses on a mortuary slab, but they were used to that even in the height of summer.
Uneventful that is, until they emerged from the cloud bank which had been obscuring the watery mid winter Sun.
In front of them glinting in the light they espied a lonely CIII spotting for the artillery close to the lines.
As they dived towards the intruder, the German pilot must have spotted them for it turned towards the approaching BE.
"Tally Ho" Yelled Mitchell to Wilkins as he opened up with his Lewis and watched the tail of the enemy spotter shredding under his fire.
The Observer threw up his hands to his face, and then Wilkins watched as an arc of bullets almost lazily curled from the pilots Spandau towards the BE.
He never felt the force of the explosion as the fuel tank erupted.
