Thread: Some Ukrainian History

    Default Some Ukrainian History

..in the short period of time (1917-21), Ukraine as we know it was divided into three separate republics - the UNR (Ukraine) and ZUNR (West Ukraine, Galicia), faced three regime changes (Democracy under UNR, monarchy under the Hetman and Directory under Petliura). In those four years Ukraine was also engaged in constant warfare on all the sides - Bolsheviks in the North, Poles/Hungarians in the West, White-Russians in the South-East. With Axis allies collapsing, there was no supplies of any kind and Allies preffered to supply Poland and White-Russians. Add the raiding anachist armies and the typhus plague...
The Central Powers installed a sympathetic government and supplied arms, including aircraft. These included some Fokker DV11's, LVG CV1, DFW CV and most probably Albatros D types. The late Dan San Abbott stated that Gotha GLV11 twin engined bombers were sent to Ukraine. Austro Hungarian types included the Berg D1, and Hansa Brandenburg C1's. Also mentioned are former IRAS aircraft such as Nieuports and even Ilya Mouremetz four engined bombers although the latter weren't servicable. After the end of the war when the Germans etc withdrew the country split into two and was invaded by the Poles and later the Bolsheviks.

Great information about little known (in general Western circles) wars after the "War to End all Wars".
    Also a nice bit for post-war what-ifs
