AAR (Chuck) Wings of Glory: Dawn of the fighters (Scenario IV) 19 October 1915

"Gentlemen!" called Major Shepard.

Instantly all in the room were standing.

"The Hun are in the process of escorting one of their Gothas towards Beuvry. Diamond, Smith you're in the rotation. Your orders are simple; bring the Giant down!"

"Yes sir!" came the simultaneous reply.

I slapped Smithy on the back, "Try not to get shot up like last time."

"That was a bother wasn't it? Tell you what, I won't get shot up and you don't let anyone escape?"

"You're on."

We climbed into our mounts and were soon on the hunt. It wass a cloudy day, but visibility is generally good. It wasn't long before we sighted them; a single Gotha being escorted by two Fokkers.

We closed quickly and engaged one of the escorts. The other escort looped under the Gotha to join the party.

As much as I wanted to play our primary mission was the Gotha so I broke off to chase her down.

The Gotha was big, but vulnerable. I closed on her coming in from underneath where her gunner couldn't reach me. The pilot turned to give his gunner a shot, but it was too late and I made short work of her.

Meanwhile Smithy had his hands full playing tag with the two Fokkers.

After briefly breaking off from each other they again began to close with one another. I was pushing the Huntress hard to get back into the fight. It just wouldn't do to let Smithy have all the fun!

As I approached close enough to engaged Smithy narrowly missed a head on collision the pulled a perfect Immelman and both of us were on the Hun's tail. With both of us having our way with him he was soon finished.

There was only one Eindecker left, but he gave us the slip by darting into the clouds.

We returned to base and the first thing Smithy said to me was, "I thought you weren't going to let any of them get away. Just what kind of cowboy are you ol' boy?"

I simply smiled and said, "I guess I owe you a drink for that don't I?"

"Quite!"

Keep this up and both your boys will be getting a gong before long. Some chaps have got VCs. for bringing down Gothas.

Yes, and I've really fallen in love with my little Bristol Scout! I guess it's true what they say; this kite would have had a stellar service record had it been properly armed at an earlier time!
