    Default New WoG Bases

    Greetings all

Recently I purchased the WoG game for my grandson's birthday. On the weekend of same, he and I played a scenario with his new game. Regrettably, I found the newer bases almost impossible to pick up because of their rounded corners. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and, other than sticking some plastic on the rear end, can anyone suggest an alternative way to fix this?

    Cheers

    Brad,
I'm with you on this. The Aerodrome Accessories stands are better, not having the beveled edges.

However, I recently tried the Altitude Glue from the Aerodrome Accessories site, and using it to keep the pegs together makes picking up the planes and moving them a lot easier (used on the very bottom one to keep it in the stand).

In fact, I needed something to allow precision moving of planes for my Wings of Glory "Silent Film" college project (stop motion animation - 400 shots to make an extremely short video). The Altitude Glue worked great. Tacky enough to keep the pegs in the stands, but removable when done "playing". The glue is like thin latex rubber, and easy to remove, and doesn't mar the stands.

I mount all my planes on Accessory Bases glued to the Ares ones. This gives a fourfold advantage. It provides a ridge to grip, weights the base more, does away wit the need for altitude counters, and allows the information of the Ares base to still be available on the base.

Hi Brad, as these find chaps have pointed out, there are two products in the Aerodrome Accessories store that would solve your problems.

The first and cheapest would be the Altitude Glue. Place a small drop of this on the pin part of each of the flight pegs and everything will stay together when you want it to... but break down for storage with out any issues at all. They will stay tacky for a couple of years. One bottle is enough to do hundreds of planes.

The second is to upgrade to the full flight stands. These will allow you to track your planes altitude right on the stand. One peg is slightly modified by cutting the pin part off and then it is inserted from the bottom of the base. This means it can't be pulled out from the top during game play. Simply grab that base peg to move the planes (of the square base edges).

I hope this helps you some.

I have to agree on the Accessories bases. I played my first game using the Fe2b base and it was much easier to pick up than the Ares bases. One thing I wish was available is some way to mark the amount of damage the aircraft can take along with its maximum altitude. My son and I tried the altitude rules and found they were quite easy to use and looked a lot like a WWI aerial battle progressed. The planes kept getting lower and lower until there was nothing left. Then it became fight-or-flee and my flee didn't work. I lost both my unarmed Be2 and its escorting Fe2 to Manfred's Alb DII.

Slightly moistening your finger tip and thumb helps when trying to pick up the models. Lick a finger and rub it on your thumb, or just breathing on the thumb and fingers before picking up helps. Also a low angle of pick-up, i.e with your hand low on the table, gives more grip.

    Phil,
Perhaps this might help with marking of the bases? Scroll down to post #12 to see altitude and climb rate addition: How to Customize Aftermarket Airplane Stands

Mike, is your film completed and on-line, or still a work in progress?

Thanks Mike. I hadn't seen that one. It should help.

I linked it above using the words "Silent Film" (here, too, now) so you could go to my college site for two different videos I've done to date.

Thanks guys. I think I will try the glue option first.

I've started gluing the bottom peg onto my Nexus/Ares stands. Having snapped a peg off it was difficult to remove the pin part from the hole. It also gives you something firm to pick the base up with. None of my aircraft are in boxes but in foam carriers so there is no problems there.

Yes Neil! This is a great idea for any models stored in foam boxes rather that the original packaging.
I also use this method for Litko bases used for my WW2 AIM aircraft, I glue a Ares peg to the Litko base so I can use the pegs.

I've not experienced the problem, but you might try roughing up the edge of the bases with some fine grit sand paper. It might help you get a better grip.
