Thread: Jasta 6 Fokker D.VIII/E.V

    Default Jasta 6 Fokker D.VIII/E.V

Here's my Jasta 6. These are Decapod designs that are some of the best WSF prints I've ever had. These have taken about 6 months to finish. I thought that with just one wing, these would be quick and easy project. They turned out to be the complete opposite, the usually hidden areas around the struts were now visible so getting the decals right took a while. I tried printing the arrows straight on the lozenge which works well. I'll be trying this again for sure. I'm delighted with how these turned out.

    Ian,
Do you need cards for these?

There is, at least, one done, by Robert [Rabbit3]: Jasta 6 - Richard Wenzl

    Thanks everyone.

Eric, for the fuselage I printed the images below on white decal paper (I printed the images 0.8cm high):

Thanks for the card link Mike, I hadn't thought about a card yet but yes I will need to make one.

    Those are magnificent beasts Ian.
I'm not suprised they took so long to complete.

    Ian,

What graphic program did you use to produce the decals? I could recreate the pattern from templates, which I am doing with Adobe Illustrator for all the German lozenge patterns (I did the 5 lozenge pattern for the Lend-Lease Contest Planes. My DVIII card was modified from one of Steve's [Guntruck] cards). If you have done that work already for the 4 lozenge pattern, we could share?

They look fantastic Mike. I will need to make some cards, I just ordered some sticky paper yesterday so should be able to make them soon. I use Paint.net for all my images and save them as jpeg files. It's so simple to use and I've never needed anything more complex. I've never tried making a card before but would struggle to make them as good as you. If you do make some I'll print them for sure. I really like the one in your last link.

I have downloaded your 4 color lozenge patterns for color matching, and I do have an illustration for the standard 4 color pattern. The decals match the configuration very closely. I just have to make up the template in Illustrator. Using Illustrator, I can match colors to any plane, and reprint the pattern to cover a specific plane. That's what I did for the Lend-Lease planes, anyway. The colors on them are nothing like standard German samples I have run across (not that I have lots of experience, though).

Could you provide the specifics of each plane? Then I can put pilots to planes for cards. This may take a bit, as I'm still working on college stuff.

This could be for two of the planes, just need pilots?

    [Edit: more cards!]
These two should be enough to do all the planes, minus the pilots.

    Mighty fine cards Mike.
I may use one of those if I may to refine my plane as it is closer to my style of design than the current one which I lifted from the files some years ago.

That looks brilliant. I think I've found 2 of the pilots, white band with two black stripes is Ltn Richard Wenzl and the black band with the wiggly stripe is Ltn Yohann Janzen. Thanks Mike.

    All,
I'm presently flittering through the site doing Random Acts of Carding. Just like this set, cause I had a close match to the Reversico plane I did last August. The card is in my Card Album (Card 3).

So, I've taken another look at the planes on the Official D VIII painting thread, and see Rob's plane, which should be easy to retouch into a matching card. Hmmm. May need to redo the lozenge camo colors, but I now have a "quick change template". It would make the RACs easier, if builders would post pilots, etc, with their efforts.

If you ask, I will try to do up a card as time permits, but I am supposed to be doing a college course. I was avoiding homework last night.

Well if you have some down time again Jager has this in his album - one of Max headrooms creations - everything is right bar the card deck which should be XD not K and the pilots (though they're not important to me). I like these old school cards & deck styles.

The closest match to that name I could find is Ltn Johannes Janzen. He was shot down and captured in June 1918. From what I've found so far, Jasta 6 received its first D VIIIs in August. It is not likely he flew a D VIII in combat, but my sources are not extensive.

The same with the identification of the same plane with Oblt Erich Loewenhardt. Loewenhardt was never in Jasta 6, IAW the same reference above, but may have flown the plane, in Jasta 6 markings for a few flights before it was repainted to Jasta 10 colors, if it was transferred between Jastas.

All that said, we could put any names we want on the cards, and most won't know the difference. Add to that, pilots swopped planes occasionally, depending on breakdowns and illness, so anyone could have been flying any given plane on a particular day.

    Rob,

Please see your original thread for a card that might work?

Ian and Mike, very nice work indeed. I am going to hang up my spray can and brushes now, and I haven't even done one custom plane.
