Thread: March Madness at The Family Game Store

Default March Madness at The Family Game Store

I'll be stuck in meetings for most of the day, but before I go, a bit of an intro to last night's WoW/G game.

The first scenario was the usual dogfight. It works well, given the rush hour traffic in this area, you never know how long it is going to take to get to the store.

It began as a three-on-three, with Todd, Anthony and I playing Fokkers.

And Rob, Paul and Bob flying Bristol Fighters.

It appears we have one separated from the pack. Time to attack the straggler.

And a new player enters the game. Terry, who evidently played in the Sails of Glory game the store ran a few weeks prior, decided to give WoW/G a try. He's flying a Fokker... which means the Biffs (who had not fired yet) got an in-flight upgrade from B/B to B/A to balance things... this waffled back and forth a few times, and I would have been perfectly happy to have them be B/B.

Did I mention March Madness? This game was pretty mad. Todd and Rob suffer a collision, and then on the next phase, the Biff fires at the D.VII:

Then at the end of the turn Rob pulls a card for fire damage, and:

Madness, I tell you. Sheer madness.

    More to come...

I like those custom painted D.VIIs... who's the lucky owner, you or Todd?

    Seconded.

I've been meaning to do a D.VIIs vs. Brisfits match, too - too bad my planes don't look nearly as good as yours, John!

Hey John I checked the store calendar is that the only day scheduled for WOG? I'd like to come down with my son some time. We are in Owings Mills.

    Thanks.
I'm yellow and black. Anthony is black and white. Todd is flying one of his historical squadron specials.

Thanks. D.VIIs paint up pretty nice for custom paint jobs. I'll admit I'm surprised. I have another on my work bench at the moment - Manfred von Richthofen's red D.VII, for my alt-hist Fate Core rpg session.

Awesome! C'mon down! We do WoW/G on the second Monday of every month. Next month will be a Bloody April game, on... 14 April. There's a thread where you can follow what's going on next at:

With their demise so close to the beginning of the game, and with Thoman newly arriving, we let both Todd and Rob respawn, so it is now four on four, with two B/A and two B/B gun Biffs against four Fokker D.VIIs.

    Thanks John, who painted them?

And it looks like we Fokkers have two of the Biffs right where we want them.

But altitude it a tricky thing, especially when fighter two-seaters. Plenty of opportunities to fire were thwarted by differences in height.

I painted mine. Anthony painted his. And Todd his. I don't recall which squadron Todd is from, but I believe he has a painted plane for each that flew in it.

Oh, C'mon John, which side won the fight? All are still in the air! More pics, please

I should mention first that RJG173 then showed up, all the way from Herdon, VA. That's quite a haul, especially in DC's rush hour traffic.

The battle continued, each side pressing for an advantage.

Much to my chagrin, that advantage went to the Biffs, as Anthony's plane disintegrated in a blinding flash.

Which left Terry's Fokker in a very tight spot.

Driving him from the air in a hail of mg fire.

    More to come...

This is looking grim. My thought is to run, maybe I can draw a few away from Todd, and if it works maybe Immelmann back around to attack.

I make my turn, and he is in the thick of it.

It may be working. At the very least, I'll be in good shape to escape should I feel the need.

Things are thinning out a bit, and I seem to have a couple looking to pursue.

Nicely done to all of you. How did you get the stripes so even and straight... tape or dry transfers???

Aside from excellently detailed planes I love that terrain mat.

What mat is that please? And where did you buy it?

Todd won it at Origins two years ago. If you look through some of our AARs you will find the company name sooner or later. It is printed in one of the corners. If you can't find it, I'll go back and look through my pics.

Anthony used decals, as I recall. Todd used dark magic. Mine is a combination of hand-painting and pin striping. If you scroll through the page below you will see the steps I went through to make her.

I loop back around, firing at a Biff and taking fire from them. As I pass Rob (in the white and PC10 Biff and who is a huge Star Wars guy) I say to him, "I have a bad feeling about this."

My Fokker turns, drawing fire from Paul.

And now Todd is fighting four Bristol Fighters.

He puts up a good fight, but goes down with a decent collection of cards, which includes at least four enemy jammed cards.

    On to scenario 2...

Thanks John, I'll have to go check that out.

As for the mat, it's made by Luis of Game On Terrain Mats. Luis is a member of the site as well.

Since we used altitude in scenario one it went a bit longer than the usual dogfight. Anthony, always the wise one, spent part of his down time getting an ice cream cone (I wish I had gotten a pic ), and then whipped up a fun little scenario using a Gotha G.I, with three Pfalz D.IIIs as escort...

    ... versus a flight of Nieuport 17s.

I, in the yellow-tailed D.III, make a boneheaded move. Immalmanning on an escort mission. I'll be lucky if I can catch back up to the action by the end of the game. And Terry, poor guy, draws the explosion, which seemed to be in a never-ending supply that night.

I also had "No Right Turn", so all I could do was Immelmann back, and hope to catch up with the action before 9PM, when the store closed.

Nice to see the new Brisfits out to play Great report!

When Terry exploded, Anthony let him run the Gotha. Anthony took over the AA fire, and we all know how that worked out the last time (i.e, much friendly fire damage was done, which made for an exciting game).

I should also point out that Rob had to leave, and RJG173 joined in, so it was ostensibly a four-on-four.

One of the interesting things about bomber escort, one often sees the Conga Line form up, as here:

Terry had to leave, so Anthony went back to piloting the Gotha-Ursinus. He takes aim with his bombs and... a direct hit!

Nicely placed, but he is done in by enemy fire.

With our bomber destroyed, and time running out, I'm finally getting close to being back in the action.

And we called it on the next phase, since it was just about 9pm. A German victory, by my count.

OH... the UPS man is at the door with my Jack Herris Pfalz book! I'll be right back!

The mad thing about scenario 2 was the number of jams. I think it was on the second turn, and everyone with the exception of me had jam counters.

All in all, a good set of games, with a good turn out.

Be sure to tune in next month, when we will have another Bloody April for you!

Those planes are pure beauty, the action intense, the mat wonderful, & the pics great.

I've thought often of doing an alt. history all-red D.VII for MvR many times myself. Still want to one of these days.

I didn't have a jam, but I suffered engine damage early on which meant stalls for the rest of the game.

The mat is fantastic... and the Allies were bloody lucky that MvR didn't see the inside of a D.VII during combat operations!

More precisely, 5 of the first 6 shots jammed, leaving 2 jammed Nieuports sitting directly on the tail of the bomber, with both guns jammed. I'm pretty sure both of those Nieuports immediately jammed again on the first shot they took after clearing.

Not soon enough. Did Herr Oberst say the other day he was guessing not until Q4?

Two fascinating games once again thanks John.
Everyone has said it all so I'll just endorse what they have written.

Unfortunately, the Gotha's guns jammed as well. I ended up with three jams in four shots. At least it was only jams; the first game we had five explosions.

Mine (the black and white plane, Oblt Bruno Loerzer, Jasta 26) is water-slide decals. I use white glue rather than Microset, because in my experience Microset/Microsol allows the decals to move when drying. The movement is minor, but becomes really evident when doing long-stripey decals.

Thanks for the tip on the white glue. I assume it's well watered down?

Yes indeed thanks for that tip Anthony.
I use watered down PVA for many applications but have never tried it for decals as yet.

Actually, no; I brush a thin layer directly on to the plane with a small brush with just a little bit of dilution. I soak my decals in water (rather than just dampening the backing), so the water from the decal is enough to give it a little bit of moveability. Note that the decal won't slide as easily as it does with Microset, so you want to watch out if you are using very thin decals.

Note that I am doing that on Shapeways models, which are a bit porous even after multiple layers of sealant.
