    Default AIR200 Ongoing Review

Some time ago I was able to buy from ebay a big lot of 1/200 AIR200 planes. I wasn't sure about it, having read what Zoe said about these models, but the planes were many, I needed many of them and so i took the plunge. They came from Down Under so they took their time arriving.
    They arrived today.

Although some are acceptable, many are very poorly done. Mind you. I took a close look at them and I see skill in the sculpting, but lack of perfection in size and form. Whom sculpted these is a good sculptor but didn't want to take the effort to make them perfect. Truly a pity.

I only got angry with the me-109's. Doing a bad sculpture is sad, but selling a me-109E, F and G as different planes with the same sculpture is cheating. But we'll get there later.

This is intended to be a on-going review of the planes I got. As I clean them and paint the I'll add them here.

With a few exceptions I think that these models aren't worth your money.
Here's the list with first impressions:

Messerschmitt 109E (Terrible - the F with round wings and minor changes)
Messerschmitt 109F (Smaller than it should be. The nose and engine are poorly cast)
Messerschmitt 109G (Smaller than it should be. The nose and engine are poorly cast)
Hurricane MK2 (Fat. Engine and nose short)
Typhoon (To be observed in detail)
Mig-3 (To be observed in detail)
La-5 (To be observed in detail)
    Yak-9 (Acceptable)
Sturmovik (To be observed in detail)
    Macchi MC-202 (Acceptable)

    Hawker Hurricane

I'm going to use these four and convert them into sea Hurricanes.
They're stubby. Short nosed. And the fuselage was made without any care. From a side view they look like Hurricanes. From above they're... fat.
    I recommend AIM or HBM.

    Macchi MC-202

    This model is almost good.
But it lacks the beauty of the original.
I don't really know where we can find this failing, but we do.
I'll see how it stands out after painting is done.

Thanks for posting the info, Quim. I think saw the site with the models, but they did not impressed me. However, the MC 202 looks good. That is the model I search for in other sites, but noone seems to offer them. Can't wait to see them painted. Go on

Thanks for the Heads up on these Joaquim, as it may well save others from your disappointment.
I will back your acclaim for AIM. I'm very pleased with their offerings.
Has anyone else experience of these AIR 200 models?

...Please. I'm waiting for the details about Lavochkin and Sturmovik.
    Really appreciate your help. Thanks.

Kubajs, I'll try to do it this weekend. My hard drive died on me, but I'll try to do it.

    The Yak-9D

You can find the Yak-9D in this model. It's not impressive, a little flat, but bearable. I'll paint this one.

The engine exhausts are too big and the canopy slightly off.

    Typhoon

One of my favorite British planes, this rendition is bad. I really don't know if I'll paint these ones.

The fuselage is wrong and the engine air intake terrible.

    Default

    Sturmovik

You can see a Sturmovik here, although the wings are very thick.

The model is heavy and chubby, but paint has proved to have made miracles for this plane.

    Default

    Mig-3

An acceptable model that suffer from the same deficiencies that the Yak-9D suffers.

I will paint them white and I think that it will help...

    La-5

This one of the best of the AIR200 line, if best can be used. It has the shape of the La-5 and almost no wrong details. I'll paint this with pleasure.

Are there any cards for this one?

I'm glad that I didn't get my kates from them and plunged for AIM. I now have quite a few AIM and I cannot fault them.
See you on the Dark Side......

So do I. I just bought these AIR200 because I saw what seems to be a bargain in ebay... Not-so-much...

You're most welcome, Kubajs! Thanks for the REP!

The Air200 La-5 and P-38 are good or at least acceptable models. I like them both.

The rest............ not so much. An excellent paint job can cover a multitude of sins, but I'm nowhere near that good.

Zoe, no painting can save the Me-109's of AIR200... They're just aren't Me-109's... Sadly...

Max Headroom did two, and Jager uploaded them here: link (This one and the next in this album)

I'm sure your skills will make these "clunkers" look great, Joaquim.
I'll add these to the list.

The Hurricanes are done. Photos here for comparing unpainted and painted miniatures.

This was a difficult labor... But I finally finished them and they're acceptable... Kind of...
The cast was very ugly. But they're Hurricanes and I have a soft spot for them.

You have made a very nice job of those Quim.
Bad castings always make things harder to paint, but you can't tell from that work.
    Rob.

Good show all round that man.

    The Mc.202 painted.

Probably one of the best AIR200 minis. Acceptable.

This might come strange, but when a miniature is not splendid, you feel more free to try different approaches on painting.

You feel that if things go wrong you're not "betraying" the quality of the miniature.

So I really enjoyed painting these birds. The Folgore's are some of the most beautiful planes in ww2.

They have the lines of Italian sport cars. Really.

Next stop, Lavochkin and Sturmovik to enlighten Kubajs.

    A fine body of aircraft.
They do you justice dear chap.
Yes they do look very sleek. It will be a pity to shoot them down with your Martlets.

Looking good, Joaquim; you can't tell they were bad castings from the finished product.

    One more AIR200 model finished.

This is my rendition of the AIR200 Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-3. Winter Cammo.

Soon I'll move one of my pilots east.

The AIR200 Mig-3 isn't a particulary good cast. But all in all it came out okay.

They look really good to me! I like them, well done. They look formidable.

As for Air-200, hrm. I got 3 types of planes from them recently & Miscmini painted them (Avenger, ME109, and Zero's) The Avengers & Zero's are in the same thread, and the ME109's are in their relevant thread as well I think, if you want to go look at them as well for comparison on production quality once painted.

I'll go see the your planes.

This are my La-5 in Winter Cammo from AIR200.

These are probably acceptable La-5. The problem with AIR200 being the extremely thick wings and tail.

Nevertheless they're worthy planes and my Soviet Winter Air Force just gained four more planes.

Now I must find a Winter Playing Mat.

And to finish by now my batch of AIR200 Russian planes:

These are my Ilyushin Il-2 Sturmovik in Winter camouflage.

This AIR200 model isn't that good... I'll have to acquire a AIM model to see the differences.

Tired of the all white and red, I've used some green in one of them. They're ready for some German armor.

Well you are certainly showing me up with your fantastic rate of production Quim.
