It does sound hard to work but maybe we could try it out in the campaign, as a playtesting warm up?
I have had a go ot this,
1/2 a ruler, and special damage only was my take on it, used a B deck. one shooter per plane
I suppose you could try pilot : pistol:1/2 ruler,...obs:rifle:whole ruler. Would give more shots as range decreased, but still only special damage
Field of fire would be "common sense"

You hit the nail right on the head with that line Baz !
Not everyone will have the planes (though that may change?!) so scenarios have to be planned with that in mind, unfair to do otherwise, however, this being OTT no-one will stop a player substituting with suitable aircraft. It's your game for your pleasure after all.
All we ask is that you play the scenario set & write the AAR using the title & date of the scenario (makes it easier to compile the collection)
My intent at the moment is a 1v1 to start with so you can either sub the aircraft or offer two AAR for Jan16

As we start the campaign in Jan16 when most aircraft have MGs fitted we will be way beyond the rifle & pistol type of air combat (no Flyboys shot in this game) so I won't be introducing any such scenario or rules in ED.

Nice one John, I like the range distances and field of fire, how'd you call the game?

Actually I call it fairly dull. It takes a while to play due to the slow speed of the aircraft, Be2=XC, Alb B1=XD, and using only special damage, it can take a while to land a shot. Take two hits, and you go home, as the aircraft is too valuable to play silly buggers

Just pop a Peter Pig observer with M/Gun in the front Cockpit.
Pilots of the early BE's were in the rear cockpit.

I have drawn up the scenario writing running order and posted it in the sticky - I have tried to balance them between Entente & CP as well as OTT old hands & new bloods. Format is Month due / Player / Campaign Month.
    This is how it looks:

May: Dave (flash) Entente - Jan16
Jun: Pete (Teaticket) Central Powers - Feb16
Jul: Paul (Tikkifriend) Entente - Mar16
Aug: Ryan (rkwright) Central Powers - Apr16
Sep: Rob (FOKyte) Entente - May16
    Oct: Si (Twisted_terrain) Central Powers - Jun16
    Nov: Chuck (WW1flyingace) Entente - Jul16
Dec: Andrzej (Nightbomber) Central Powers - Aug16.
    Jan15: John (jbmacek) tba - Sep16
Feb: Anthony (Tusekine) Central Powers - Oct16
    Mar: Eric (7eat51) Entente - Nov16
Apr: Brian (Archidamus) Entente - Dec16
May: Rob (Moonsylver) Central Powers - Jan17
Jun: Barry (Gullyraker) Entente - Feb17
Jul: Neil (Skafloc) Central Powers - Mar17
Aug: Shawn (diceslinger) Entente - Apr17
    Sep: Chris (Fast.git) Central Powers - May17
Oct: John (Johnbiggles) Entente - Jun17
Nov: Trev (Brambo) Central Powers - Jul17
    Dec: Tba ........................Aug17
    Jan16: Tba .........................Sep17
    Feb:..........................Oct17

Authors should aim to post their scenario by the 1st of the month or just before. Take note of aircraft types becoming available, as well as comments listed in that post, as they may help/affect your story telling.

Anyone who has not done so yet - can you pm me your pilot lists so I can round out the roster: Looking for 4 scout pilots - Lt, 2Lts & Sgts for the Entente; Obltn, Ltns, Fwbls for the CP.

As we have some time and by popular demand, for those that have them, please let me have names of a couple of two-seater crews you may wish to play. ie pilot/observer. those with FE's, Gunbus types will need crewmen anyway (let you pick the ranks)
This will give you flights with 8 members for the kick off.

May 1917 for me... the RFC reeling from the effects of "Bloody April" but winning the Battle of Arras... and bolstered by the arrival by the SE5 and Brisfit. Interesting times to be sure.

Looking forward to this. I only have what, 17 months to plan my mission?

True. But if I remain consistent, I won't think about it until just before the deadline and then be forced to work like a madman to get it completed on time.

We each have our process, I suppose.

I just finished painting my first Shapeways planes; two Bristol Scouts and a Gotha G.I. I'm going to try them out tomorrow and post an AAR of them in action! I think you guys sold me on the product...

Before this starts I have a few Shapeways to paint up myself. 2 Bristol Scouts, 2 RAF BE2Cs, 4 Vicker Gunbus', 3 RAF FE2Bs, 4 Rumpler CIs, 2 Morane Salnier Ps, 1 RAF FE8, 4 Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutters, 1 Albatross DII, 2 Seimens-Schukert DI, 2 Fokker D Vs... I know I won't get then done in time but will work on then as I can. At least I know I should be able to cover most of the scenarios!
