Thread: Gimbal Mounts

    Default Gimbal Mounts

I'm planning on purchasing some gimbal mounts and was curious about placement. I read a couple threads about gluing to the plane, but recently saw a WWll plane with it glued to the bottom of a peg attached to the miniature. Leaving the miniature intact and I'm assuming the mount for multiple planes. Has anyone had any luck with this set up? Drawbacks? Forgive me if this is repeated info........

I do the attach the ball bearing to a peg so the plane is uneffected. I cut the peg off of a section, drill a small indent and glue the bearing. I'm hoping to use the cut off pegs on my Shapeways and model kits.

There are several mounting threads here on the site show not only photos, but even step by steps. But as a direct answer to your question, there is a draw back to mounting the bearing at the end of a peg. The further you move the bearing away from the plane, the more leverage you are applying to the mount. This will make them not hold as well. The degree that this effects them is based on the mini that is being mounted. Albatros D.Va and Roland C.II minis will have a hard time with this setup for sure. There are ways to offset this issue that are mentioned in several of those other threads.

The system works smoothly on lighter models, like Shapeways 3D printouts or AIM resin models. I just drill a small, shallow pit in the bottom of the fuselage and glue the ball there. Then just glue the mount on top of a typical peg and the mini can make all the maneuvers.

These are attached to Shapeways models:

These are AIMs, that are equipped with a kind of peg originally attached with a metal screw head, where you can glue the ball:

Even my AIM Wellington Bombers are O.K. with the ball glued to the aircraft at the point where I removed the peg and screw.

    Thanks everyone for the info!

I've glued a magnet to the bearing and use a Litko topper with a magnet in one side to convert back to the peg. It's another option for not gluing the bearing on the plane and works fine on larger models.
