This looks pretty fun, how do I join in on this? Or do I have to wait for the next campaign / front to start?

If the OIC is happy to let you join a side, just run a couple of the trial missions and then drop into the action John.
I believe that the Axis forces are a bit short of pilots at the moment.

I'm partial to the US and the UK, but I'm willing to help out with whichever side or country needs help.
    Thanks!

John there are two campaigns running:

    European Theater Operations - ETO
    Pacific Theater Operations - PTO

The mechanics are the same for each and you are not restricted to 1 you can play in both and if you wish fly for one side in one campaign and the other in the second.

Whichever you choose follow these steps:

    1. Pick a theater or Theaters
    2. Choose a side to fly for.
    3. PTO is 41-mid 43 so aircraft choice should start in 41 and progress towards 43 as scenarios are played.
    4. Pick a squadron of 12 pilots (start with fighters we can expand to other types once you get the hang of it).
    5. Choose 12 pilot names and give them ranks.
    6. Assign to each plane a pilot and give each 1 from the following totals:
    ...1 Ace Pilot
    ...3 Veteran Pilots
    ...5 Standard Pilots
    ...3 Rookie Pilots
    7. Read the Fire in the Skies Campaign rules.
    8. Fly missions when your ready.
    9. Write an AAR (After Action Report) and include pictures.
    10. You can dice for your own pilots when shot down etc or you can leave the dice roll to myself (using an online diceroller) and you'll also get a little postscript after being shot down write up to.

When you're ready just PM me the details, I'll add you to the roster/spreadsheet and your ready to go.

Also the specials we are writing for Malta.
Most can be done with the Standard Hurricanes and Sea Gladiators. Some Italian Aircraft are needed, but now we are getting into 1941 The Luftwaffe are in the mix, so you can use ME's Stukas and Heinkels. if you like.
No special camo as they all tended to use anything they were in unless fighting in the Desert. Some Hurries had Malta specisal camo but don't let that bother you as some did not. FAA used the sea grey light grey as usual.
For a complete rundown of the planes you can use see here.

Like John this all looks great to me, but I'm just starting out with the Wings side of things (most of my time has been over on the Anchorage). I may not be ready for the campaign as I'd like to be more familiar with the rules used. Beyond Neil's #309 post, where do you recommend I start concerning solo rules needed? And is it more realistic to start with WGF and then move to WGS? Thanks!

  18. #318

Jim, I think WGF is easier, and the planes are not as deadly. I would start with games that do not include altitude or most of the special damages, etc. Just like on the Anchorage - basic rules plus a little. Once you're familiar with the solo charts, you can add things as desired. A bunch of the OTT-Final Months scenarios have a low barrier to entry, if you will. I have not looked at the current campaign, but will be doing so this week, as I now have a roster of pilots ready to fly.

Thanks Eric. I'll check that out then. I've been reading both WGF and WGS AAR's and I gathered that WWI might be easier. Ironically though I have more WW2 than WW1 planes and I'm not sure how that happened?!

    Operation Excess.

Force A: HMS Warspite, Valiant, Nubian, Mohawk, Dainty, Gallant, Greyhound, Griffin, Jervis and Illustrious would sail from Alexandria to cover convoys MC 4, MW 5 and ME 6 east of the Skerki Banks

    Kaga
    Horyu
    Soryu

looking for at least 2 other cruisers and 1 battleship other than Yamato/Musashi.

Transport and 5 Carriers to do...oh and IJN Fuso (a battleship at last).

]Once hailed as the "Largest Shipbuilding Town in the World",[56] ships were built on the Wear from at least 1346 onwards and by the mid-18th century Sunderland was one of the chief shipbuilding towns in the country. The Port of Sunderland was significantly expanded in the 1850s with the construction of Hudson Dock to designs by River Wear Commissioner's Engineer John Murray, with consultancy by Robert Stephenson.[57] One famous vessel was the Torrens, the clipper in which Joseph Conrad sailed, and on which he began his first novel. As Basil Lubbock states, Torrens was one of the most successful ships ever built, besides being one of the fastest, and for many years was the favourite passenger ship to Adelaide.[citation needed] She was one of the most famous ships of her time and can claim to be the finest ship ever launched from a Sunderland yard. She was built in ten months by James Laing at his Deptford yard on the Wear in 1875.

Between 1939 and 1945 the Wear yards launched 245 merchant ships totalling 1.5 million tons, a quarter of the merchant tonnage produced in the UK at this period. Competition from overseas caused a downturn in demand for Sunderland built ships toward the end of the 20th century. The last shipyard in Sunderland closed on 7 December 1988.[58]
