Thread: 1/200 Me262 Schwalbe

    Default 1/200 Me262 Schwalbe

For the game I planning to run in Prague I needed Me262's. Thanks to Blackronin I found them and this is their thread. All four are now build and primed so its now time to choose painting schemes.

Pictures below are from the build. Putting them together was straight forward and the lack of a construction manual wasn't an issue. Once completed I gave them a treatment with putty to even some edges. After that dried they were heavily sanded to remove the panel lines which were moulded onto the wings instead of into them.

To add detail I drilled out the engines and inserted the point of a toothpick at the rear and a short piece of steel wire in the front. Finally the gun ports were melted in with the back of a fine drill.

Very impressive re construct Thomas. Although I'm not au fait with the Me 262 it looks pretty convincing to me.
May I enquire which manufacturer is responsible?

Good find. I have a few Me262's in 1/144 (F-Toys) and don't see them in the AIM catalogue.

I bought them here. No idea who the manufacturer is. Joaquim pointed me in their direction.

They are not the best Me262 models around but since they are the only ones they'll do. All other models in the pack are useless.

AIM, HBM, Shapeways,... They all didn't have any Me262 in 1/200.

These are old planes. Done in huge numbers in the 1980's by an Italian Company.
Now you can only find them in ebay and the like.
I also have two. Not yet converted.
    Yours look fantastic, Thomas.
    Looking forward for the painting.

It is based on the above pattern but did not finish it as the one shown above. It is the darkest of the four and tried to give it some color with adding the yellow five rather than adding more black decals to it.

Great work Thomas they will make great Targets for your Con Games.

Incidently I am currently reading "The Big Show" by Pierre Clostermann, DFC, DSO. which is about his exploits in the RAF from 1942 until Wars end. An absolutely wonderful read of which I will post a book review shortly.
Towards the end of the book he encounters many 262's whilst flying Tempests.
One chapter mentions Walter Nowotny who they had great respect for & the book mentions he was shot down whilst coming in to land a 262 which was apparently just Silver metal finish. No camo at all!

For me it's an aircraft that I have learned to love. Not the most beautifull one overall but from some angles I does tend to shine. Despite its drawbacks, when in the hands of a well trained pilot it was a wonderfull machine.

Actually been thinking on doing an all silver one but changed that plan eventually. They now look better in green.

Pretty sure Schwalbes didn't fly there; almost everything else certainly.

Nice job, Mike. I do not think there is a suitable maneuver deck yet because it would require extra-long cards.

    David,
I was thinking of the new decks, but I don't have any of them. However, the P-51 outturns the Me-262, so proly shouldn't use that one. Someone will offer a solution.

Only when the Me-262 is taking off or landing. Otherwise, the Schwalbe beats the Mustang by 50-100MPH depending on altitude and information source.

    Karl,
I wasn't suggesting that the Me-262 was the same speed or slower. Just that the existing maneuver deck seemed closest in speed, from strictly the velocity perspective. But in searching for images and squadron markings, I came across a "wing loading" diagram, showing a comparison of the P-51 and the Me-262. The P-51 could out-turn the Me-262, sort of like an Albatos vs a SPAD.

The 100-ish mph difference is a quandary I'll leave to the Unofficial Stats Committee.

Ah, sorry; my brain read "outran"
Yes turning wasn't the Me-262's strong point. Looking at the Fighting Wings stats (rather than trying to track down turn radii data on line), minimum speeds needed for the various turns are considerably higher for the Schwalbe than the Mustang.
Given the higher speeds of the Me-262, I wouldn't want to venture a guess for the maneuver deck, even with an extender card.
