So Penarth ( Crusade ) is over.
I would like to thank all who came along and joined in our games. I personally had a grat time, picked up a bargain in 2x WW2 hurricanes for a good price and the last two Frigates I wanted for Sails of Glory.
Set off early from Bristol to pick up one of our members bogue and then a nice trip through Central Cardiff, thank you Sat Nav !!, luckily that early in the morning no issues.
We arrived at approx 08:40 and was pleased to see we were not near the outside door like last year so nice and warm.
Soon most of our crew arrived
L-R Rear SButton, Steves lad, Burt, Bogue
L-R Front Armstrong J lad, Armstrongjohn1
Guntruck turned up later so we had 6 Aerodrome representatives about.
We managed to get an extra table and so a small display set up, I normally put this on if possible to lure unsuspecting punters then pounce and give them a tirade on WGF, WGS and the availability of things supporting the games. The AA bases normally get a few questions though thuis show I was asked a bit about mats and WGS.
First game was an early dogfight to get int of swing of things, Halberstadts versus DH2
This was a resounding win for the German airmen
Next we pit DR1 agains camels and a lone Spad, who not only was late joining the fray but was sneaky and used a lower number of pegs, but it did him no good
This time victory went to the Entente.
Next came our , it seems now, my traditional bombing of the local chippy in the town by the dastardly Hun, 2 Gotha bombers with a Phalz DIII escort whose mission was to break the morale and resolve of the brave Tommy ground troops by bombing in order , the local Fish and Chip shop with a secondary target of the seedy back street cinema that seems to be full most of the time!
To stop the Gothas the RFC sent up no less than 4 SE5a and a couple of Camels
After the first few moves, the Phalz was on fire and one of the SE5a went on a sight seeing trip on the edge of the map
The Germans flew unswerveingly towards the town and it goal of the local chippy and Cinema, the RFC closing in
After some close shooting one camel bit the dust and a SE5 was on fire, though the Phalz was also looking quite toasty
With one allied plane down, the rest seemed galvanised into action and four set upon one Gotha, the last SE5 seemed to realise the action was else where and turned towards the Gotha
The Gotha that was ganged up on did not last and went down with the Tommies now looking for the second one, but had they left it too late to save the Chippy
Yep they had, no Fish and Chips for the town Garrison, the RFC pilots made a note NOT to go into town for a few days
The gotha turned for home pursued by three SE5 and a Camel with a further SE5 out of camera shot
Too intent on the Gotha a SE5 collides with a Camel, one going down while the gotha rear gunner also took out a pursuing SE5
Homeward bound with three enemy planes in pursuit
The British pilots learn, the hard way, not to attack a Gotha from the sides
only two in pusuit now and one on fire
The German rear Gunner helps the fire along, now only one pursuer
We did think the Gotha was going to escape but McCudden fired a last burst and down went the Gotha ( typical the crux moment and the pic didnt come out sorry)
Last Game was a quick dogfight which was cut short due to time. This was SE5 and a Spad versus Fokker DVII
A thoroughly enjoyable day, thanks to all who came along.
We did introduce a number of the public to the game and once again all said how much they enjoyed the game and how fun it was.
Looking forward to the next show, cheers chaps
