Thread: Republic P-47D Thunderbolt (Razorback): Pick your pilots for the up coming minis

  1. #1

Default Republic P-47D Thunderbolt (Razorback): Pick your pilots for the up coming minis

Now that we know we are getting a P-47D Thunderbolt (Razorback) in the next Series release, which pilots or units would you like to appear on the minis?

There is only one rule, you must post a picture of the pilot's plane or a plane from that unit.

    Let the fun begin!

or Lt. Robert S. Johnson (61st FS, 56th FG). The first (OD uppers) is from 1943, the second (silver) from 1944.

This one is interesting... simply because it served in the Pacific. Pilot - Maj. Harry McAfee. Saipan, Summer 1944.

I think Gabby's is a must, so I doubt we would also see "Lucky" since the scheme is so close (and it's giving the bird which would not go over well in a family game). Johnson's silver plane could fill the "shiny" check box, but I think there are much better options as far as looks go for that.

    Keep them coming guys!

Let me show a Gabby's picture with his fellow pilots of Polish 315th squadron from times they were flying together
Definitely we need his plane as a mini

This one might give some nice color and PTO rep...

Or, Bill Dunham's "Bonnie" from the 460th FS would add a nice blend of NMF and color...

    Chris,
You don't really care how much of a PITA it is to do checkerboard paint jobs, do you? That goes for cards, too. Although I do have a "back" button on my computer, which repainters don't have.

Checkered noses can be dealt with decals or label paper; at least with practice. I'm seeing a lot of practice in my future

Not being an expert on U.S. aircraft, they all look incredible to me. After all that Drab and earth colour, I got excited when I discovered The British Desert camo scheme.
I will just be grateful to get them whichever scheme is adopted.

After thinking a bit didn't the Brazil fly P-47's ? That would something different to add to the game.

  28. #28

Yes, but they were bubble-tops (not razor backs) and their cammo scheme was the usual olive drab or aluminium

You could get a Brazilian P-47 with a little repainting on the New Ray P-47.

    +1 for Hubert Zemke.
Actually what i really wish is not a particular pilot, it is one of the 3 Thunderbolts in a simple camo, so it has a chance for a paint job instead of a decal job.

On the one hand, I'd love a 318th FS bird (already pictured, one of the 325th FG Checkertails) since it's my grandfather's old squadron (albeit in its later 318th FIS incarnation when they flew F-106 jets), but we already have William Lott's P-40 representing the Green Dragons, and there are tons of Razorback Jug aces or other colorful schemes.

Does anyone know the wingspan of a Bubble Top (1/200)?
    Thanks

    Nick

  44. #44

    Default

D Bubbletop would be same as a Razorback, only differing in the canopy and upper fuselage--the change was the D-25 production block, and many model manufacturers tool their P-47 kits with interchangeable spines so you can but the kit as either. And it turns out, the N tip only looks "clipped" because it's more squared-off--the N span is 1'8" MORE than the D (42' 7" vs 40' 9"), so the combination of a broader and wider wing would have explained the PTO suitability with its range improvements.

Making an N out of a D will be a LOT of work, due to the strake in front of the tail and having to scratchbuild the outer wing section.

Thanks Diamondback, but could yiu display these numbers in centimeters? We dont use inches in Brazil. Sorry for the trouble.

    Nick

  46. #46

20*2.54=50.8cm. In 1/200 scale, this means an N would be 2.54mm greater span.

A couple of points. As long as there will be a model for the Pacific theater of operations I will be happy. As for the other suggested countries I would be against that idea. My view is that this aircraft is American so lets keep the paint schemes American.
