Thread: FW 190D's de-evolving to FW190A's ?

  1. #1

    Default FW 190D's de-evolving to FW190A's ?

After doing the TA 152 conversion i wondered about going the other direction . . . take a D model and change it into an A model . . .

Bottom left is the D version and above it the A version, then there is the Ares D model

I was hoping to just take a bit off the nose, but here you can see the need to cut the rear fuselage as well . . .

Rough plan for the attack. The operation will be tricky as both ends of the fuselage will need be cut and both are in the metal sections. When will those little guys arrive in the mail?

Let's hope they arrive soon Dave. Remember the Devil makes work for idle Elves.

I'm going to try the wing and nose jobs for the Ta-152 conversion; I'm not sure I'm up for this one, even to get some A models

So when I got home the new volunteers had arrived . . . so it was out to the shop! Chop! Chop! (actually saw and grind!)

The nose pops off with help of a pair of needle nose pliars, the rest requires cutting the metal cast fuselage.

The decision to cut the tail strip out was just right

A few drops of thick CA brings them all together-put a drop of glue on one part and a drop of accelerator on the other, and they stick instantly!

Rats! Should have ground off the side scoop before I glued them together-and the exhausts too!

Ready to touch up the paint and convert the other two . . .

So it can be done! De-evolution in your own home!

I have started to align the top flush in the clamp, splitting the side displacement approx .007 on each side and letting the major offset accrue at the bottom of the fuselage - .015" total, which is plastic on the mini and allows for the re-contour of the plastic step to be sanded off flush. The sides are filled with CA after the joint is set by applying super thick CA to the area with a tiny swab then hit the fillet with accelerator which keeps it from flowing out. Sand the resulting glue hump with an emery board when totally cured. The results are very smooth and after painting there is no clue to what has happened : ) We are only taking .09" of material out of the fuselage length.

Warning people, there are now 21 of these out there in the game . . .

    FW190 mass production.

Two questions to the master of minatures:

Why the decals look so elevated?

What about the armament of the FW190A. Is it equal to the FW190D armament? (Do the plane's base fit.)

The decals are really stickers I make on label paper and before they get a top coat of clear lacquer the edges tend to float up - once coated they lay flat . . . : ) As for guns and maneuvering I leave that up to the pros . . .

Actually, I like the way the Dora looks; my complaint of it's release was that it had a limited service life compared to the As, Fs and Gs.
    {though from what Zoe sent me, some were flying in the Congo in the 60s }
I like the look of the As too

OK, David. What are you up to! I now have templates and masks for the above planes, so changing numbers and groups should be minimal, within a given JG (Yeah. Until you checkered the cowlings...). I even have a few different color schemes, other than the ones above. Please post your JG ids, as hunting down suitable info is a PITA.

Still being discussed in committee; in general, yes, though the Jabo and Zerstorer versions are slower.

Found this color reference for the gray/dark gray color schemes in "Flying Colors" by William Green and Gordon Swanborough, here is the color profile/plan view and the descriptive text with group and pilot info, but it is for a night fighter and has some antennae etc . . .

    Does this help the cause?

-190A fighters hovered around 400MPH top-end; as pointed out, weighing it down with a bunch of bombs or rockets would kill the top speed (weight *and* drag).
