Thread: Staaken/HP, to be or not to be? That is the question.

  1. #1

Default Staaken/HP, to be or not to be? That is the question.

Ares has mentioned a desire to release both the HP 0/400 and Zeppelin Staaken, but how feasible is this really? These planes are roughly twice the size as the Gotha and Caproni we already have. If the Gotha and Caproni retailed for $35, I think we should expect the HP and Staaken to be somewhere around twice the price. That puts them in the $65-$75 range. Would you be willing to pay that for a single miniature?

The Poll selections are grouped to allow more data to be collected, so please read each one and select all that apply to you.

I also vote for bigger mats and tables! : ) Love big scenarios!

I've a half built Staaken from Skytrex and by the time I bought the kit and decals it has cost me about £50 so $70 doesn't seem too bad. Saying that I have one of each already so would only buy more if the price was around the $50 mark.

Large matts, now there's a good idea.

I'd like to have them both, but do not need them that (70 $) badly. Having them would add some fun, but not that much, so 50$ is the absolute ceiling for me.
As it is with WGS (for me) there are not many volunteers who like to pilot bombers or run it via AI movement around here, so the middle ones are just enough in size. With bigger crates there would be too much of bookkeeping which I do not like. The core system of both game is dynamic. Running a game with bigger bombers, although visually appealing, may slow it down to a level unacceptable for me. However - great that ARES provide us with that option. Some gamers will welcome these birds with joy

I have an 0/400. I can't see much use for a Staaken so if I did get either of them it would be for curiosity / fun value only hence only interested if the price is low. Which I can't see it being TBH.

  6. #6

    Default

I answered both, $60-70, but to clarify, I obviously would buy both if they were LESS than $60-70, not only if they were $60-70.

  7. #7

    Default

As I already have both, I would only be interested in one if it were cheaper than $60. That would just interest me because it was an Ares original. I could not see me ever needing more than two of each.

Have got several 0/400s and a Staaken from Skytrex but haven't got round to making them up, so a painted one of each ready to go sounds attractive to me. However $60-70 is not so attractive....

I always buy atleast one of every WW1 aircraft. In this case it would be one each.

Unfortunately saddled with the "completeist collector fever" so would purchase at least one each of anything with a corresponding WoW/WoG card regardless of price.

That said, these remind me much of balloons...they provide plenty of scenario opportunities but not the first thing in hand when packing up to head to an event. Plus the price and useability limit need or desire for repaints.

Perhaps these would best be filed in the rare niche market of the game and some supportive producer (Shapeways, Skytrex, etc.) given acknowledgement as the "preferred producer". There are a number of planes that, although not as costly, also are limited in need and desirability.

I'm going to comment because I don't know how my answers slot in.

I will buy one of each paintscheme of Staaken, O/400, or anything else WG_/SG_ Ares releases--for me it's not a question of IF, only WHEN, and the only "IF" is if I can marshal the finances to get the purchases made before they sell out. A lower price DOES make the rate of cash flow from my wallet into Ares's coffers a lot faster, but as a completist collector...

If KS is a viable option, I would highly recommend it. It would provide Ares with the marketing research data to know whether to produce them. I would hate for Ares to choose not to produce them because of a belief the planes wouldn't sell. KS would give them a more definitive answer. Stretch goals could be added for KS exclusives, e.g. crew cards, etc., items that are cheap in terms of production costs.

  13. #13

Based on size, I would expect the O/400 and Zepp to be the same price as the balloon packs.

I have got a RecEagle (Skytrex) HP o/400 and aStaaken.
But like the idear of an official, don't like the price though, a bit steep at $70 which generally means by time it gets to UK £70, more than a tad expensive for a single model.
So yrs would like , but heavily dependent upon price

I'm not too happy with the results of any Kickstarter have been part of. My Ogre is finally scheduled to arrive this Monday, a full year late, and Sails of Glory??? Still not sure when I'll see that.

I have a Zep. so would buy 0/400 . But more just to have one. As with a lot of my planes they get little to no use in games so only 1 needed

One of each & both only if they were US$50 or less

KS maybe if the don't want more then 20 US-Dollar shipping cost to Europe for two planes.

Another thing to think about... if the retail price is US$70, they would sell on the AA site for around the US$50 mark.

Agreed. 50.00 would be a fair price I think. Personally I think they should reprint some balloons before creating these big birds but I would be in for them at the 50.00 range.
I would not be interested in a kickstarter program for these

I can count on two hands the number of Zeppelin Staakens I have sold via Shapeways. They may be big, but they aren't big sellers. Mine are in the... $45-$55 price range, so I would be more than happy to pay about $50 for a pre-painted mini with base and cards.

So not in time for a big Sails of Glory birthday bash, but close.

Having already got a Shapeways 0/400 & only gamed with it once I would not really be interested in either aircraft if Ares releases them irrespective of price.
Got a Gotha already to match with the H-P.

I bought a Staaken from Shapeways; with decal sheets (homemade but you need a lot of decals if you do lozenge) it cost me a bit over $70 and more than two weeks to do

Two weeks, you're lucky. These birds have expensive tastes for sure.

Ive voted both if less than £50. moneys an issue at moment , kick-starters again are not an option I would like ,usually have to pay postage from USA then of course theres the import duties so its always cheaper to pre order from my LGS for me and wait that extra month or so but with the discounts I get and no p&P to pay I can buy more toys .

Can you count on one hand the number you've sold to people you don't game with?

  31. #31

    Default

No, but I could count on one hand the number of people who I game with who have bought one. And I think that goes for just about every one of my designs. Which is cool. I'd be more than happy to give a few (smaller) planes away to the people I game with.

  32. #32

At 50 USD or less I'd have a punt; experience tells that despite the exchange rate that would become 50 GBP by the time it got here then & I would buy one instead of two or none at all.
