Now where are my Wildcats?
Now for the terrain at Kanoehe Bay!
See you on the Dark Side......
A good job Clipper and his elves are away in their carriers - otherwise the shipbuilding effort is going to make BAe systems look like an atrophied remnant...oh! Hang on....
There were Wildcats on the islands, but I can't find any full breakdowns of losses among them -- only a vague reference to "all 48 USMC acft. on Ewa" being destroyed, which number appears to include F4Fs.

There's a good write-up here; 11 Wildcats were on Ewa at the time, 50% of the strength of VMF-211. (The other half were "lucky" enough to have been deployed elsewhere a few days earlier. Unfortunately the elsewhere in question was Wake Island, so not a reprieve so much as "out of the frying pan into the fire"....)
Of the 11 on Ewa, apparently 9 were total write offs and the other 2 damaged - it doesn't seem like any were even manned, let alone successfully gotten airborne.

OK, looks about right. Thanks.
The half of VMF-211 at Wake also went down -- but they did not go down easy: http://www.history.navy.mil/download/ww2-15.pdf .
Yep - utterly hopeless fight, but damn they put one up anyway - a real valiant effort.
Alright, who said the "M" word?........I loathe that man!
Nice flight of attack aircraft Neil!
