Default Ostfront AAR - Fire and Ice - Operation Taifun November 1941

This AAR uses an actual aerial reconnaissance photo of the Petrowka area provided by Marechallanes in the thread http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sho...609#post246609.

I took the Germans and my son Alexander took the Russians.

OPERATION TAIFUN, MOSCOW FRONT NOVEMBER 15, 1941 - PART ONE

With the onset of the winter finally freezing the thick, clinging mud of the Russian 'rasputitsa', the Wehrmacht launches their final operation to take Moscow codenamed Taifun. Assigned to the 4.Panzerarmee, the 20. Panzer-Division would be in the vanguard of the attack. Commanded by Spanish Civil War veteran Generalmajor Wilhelm Ritter von Thoma, the 20. Panzer was to attack towards Vyazma, the last major defensive line protecting the Soviet capital.

From the turret of his Panzer 38(t), Oberleutnant Kurt Müller of Panzer Regiment 21 peered through his binoculars at the 'kolchos' or collective farm. There was no sign of Ivan, but then despite the propaganda over the past six months he had proven himself a crafty devil who new how to fight. There was no time for delay however, as his company formed the vanguard of the 20.Panzer. Müller ordered an advance with one column moving to the left of the kolchos with his troop taking the right. Just then two Messerschmitt Bf 109F fighters appeared from the west, all the fighter cover the hard-pressed Luftwaffe could provide to cover the advance.

The two pilots in the cockpits of the 'Friedrichs' were Hauptmann Hans Philipp Gruppenkommandeur of I./JG 54 'Grünherz' and his Katzmarek Feldwebel Herbert Brönnle of 2./JG 54. Both were experienced Jagdflieger having seen plenty of action since the early days of the war over Poland and France. Flying at 7000 metres, they scanned the horizon for the Red Air Force, which had become much bolder of late as the Wehrmacht closed in on Moscow. Hptm. Philipp was looking down at the farm below when his eye caught a sudden movement. There some 2000 metres below he made out two winter camouflaged aircraft streaking in from the east - Sturmoviks!

Serzhant Yuri Klimetsov pushed his throttle of his 'Ilyusha' to the firewall. He and his wingman comrade Mladshiy Serzhant Piotr Orlov could see the grey shapes of the Fascist tanks against the white snow. Klimetsov's young gunner screamed into his microphone - "Germanski fighters, 12 o'clock!" Klimetsov looked up and not for the first time wished for fighter escort, but losses had been heavy and there were no planes to spare. The enemy fighters were high, and he judged his flight had a chance to get in before the Fascists could intercept. Klimetsov knew their mission had to succeed for the Red Army had yet to consolidate their line after the withdrawal from Bryansk. "Damn the fighters, we attack now - for Stalin!"

Having got in under the Messerschmitts Klimetsov and Orlov dive on the panzers. In their haste to get to grips with the enemy however they are going too fast to get down on the deck for a close range pass.

Opening up at long range with their cannons and machine guns they still damage the two Fascist tanks, killing the driver of the lead vehicle. Philipp and Brönnle pull hard on their sticks to get in behind the Russians.

Philipp and Brönnle make a pass over the Sturmoviks, attacking each of the Russian aircraft. Orlov's gunner returns fire at Brönnle's aircraft, the 12.7mm rounds punching through his wing.

As the Russian pilots continue to cut a path of destruction through the lightly armoured panzers hitting Oberleutnant Kurt Müller's vehicle. The Messerschmitts reverse and continue their attack with Philipp blasting Orlov's machine but also hit by return fire. (Philipp's attack was a telling blow however, as 20mm cannon rounds smashed into the Il-2s engine).

Throttling right back the slower Russians again force the Messerschmitts to overshoot, Orlov's gunner putting another burst into Philipp's aircraft. Klimetsov puts a burst of cannon fire into the lead panzer which starts to burn!

Both German pilots fire on Orlov's aircraft. Philipp's high deflection burst goes wide (0/0), but Brönnle times his fire well and blasts the Russian out of the sky (8/2!). Orlov returns fire, but cannot track the fast moving 'Friedrich'.

Klimetsov glanced at Orlov's Ilyusha as it hit the deck, breaking up on impact. He could barely spare a moment to consider the loss of his comrades, for he was already making another attack on one of the Fascist tanks. His cannon shells found their mark, the panzer's armour glowing white hot as they punched through the less protected side.

Meanwhile on the right flank Obltn. Müller's men managed to extinguish the fire that had threatened to consume his column's lead vehicle.

On the left flank of the German advance Klimetsov throws his Ilyusha into a split S manouver bringing the cannon armed beast down to tree top height. Closing the range on a damaged tank Klimetsov unleashes a devastating barrage of 23mm cannon shells and machine gun fire, blowing off both tracks. The panzer grinds to a halt and the surviving crew abandon their wrecked vehicle. Kilmetsov manages a grim smile, 'That one was for you Piotr.'

Ignoring the Messerschmitts Klimetsov lines up another attack on the closest panzer. Just as he is about to fire the Il-2 shakes as Fw. Brönnle gets in another accurate high deflection shot on the Russian plane. 'Fascist bastard!' Klimetsov screams as his aim is spoiled and he misses his target.

Composing himself Klimetsov lines up the tank as the marauding Messerschmitts pass overhead, one taking another burst from his rear gunner. The Russian pilot fires off an accurate burst, his guns finishing the panzer. On the ground Obltn. Müller calls for his crew to get out of the vehicle before leaping from the turret hatch, hurried along by the machine gun fire impacting the snow all around. As the Sturmovik thunders overhead the panzer officer lets fly a string of expletives aimed at all 'fly-boys', both the Russians who were trying to kill him and the Luftwaffe who seemed to doing very little about it!

I have been wanting see the Il-2 and the 109F in a game for ages, and Sven's map gave me a good reason. I learned a few things in this engagement.

The Il-2 ZEMENTBOMBER (CONCRETE BOMBER) at 22 damage points is a tough opponent! You need at least two 109s to stand a decent chance of downing one of these monsters. They are more manouverable than a bomber and a smaller target. Stay away from the front guns, they can shred you. If you are flying the Il-2 make sure you stay close to your wingman and concentrate your fire. If you play the Germans get as many flak guns as you can.

The Messerschmitt Bf 109F is a fast aircraft, which in this case placed it at a disadvantage when fighting the slower Sturmovik. I was always overshooting Alexander's Il-2s and trying desperately not to end up with two 23mm cannons just behind my tail.

For the Il-2 get down low and go-go-go. Basic stuff but Alex made his first attacks from level 2 which saw mixed results, once he got the Il-2 to altitude 1 he chewed up the panzers. For the 109F stay one level above the Il-2s. You still get a B damage chit for the weapons and an A damage chit for firing from above.

A very exciting and interesting game Carl.
With a few changes in personelle and area of opperations, I could do something similar as soon as I can get my North African Desert aircraft painted up.
    Thanks for posting this.

    Very exciting finale Carl!
Pity about the two brave Russian Crews but they certainly put paid to that Panzer column!
Hope you had some Vodka to warm yourself after the combat.
    Again what a great Mat!
Hope to see that one perhaps at Wintercon which would be fitting.
You would really need the Vodka for Winter in Canberra believe you me.

I think the commander of the Panzerdivision was not amused about the result of this attack.

I need some informations about the two Bf.109s.

One of them dealt out B-damage?

    Anyways a great AAR, Carl.

Next time add some Sd.Kfz.10/4, please.

I have given the Messerschmitt Bf109F armed with 2 x 7,9mm and 1 x 2cm a short range firepower of AC and long range firepower of B.

My son got in under my 109s and did more damage than I expected. It was very hard to stay with the slow moving Il-2s, I had to keep coming around for another pass.

East front scenario! That's what I miss with official Ares releases, as we have almost no Russian planes. Thanks for sharing!

By the way Sturmoviks' are really deadly birds!
