Thread: The British are so lucky!!!

Default The British are so lucky!!!

I wish I had recorded this as an AAR. My Aviatik escorted by a Taube was on a photo recon mission. As they approached an Avro 504 two seater flanked by two Avro504 single seaters, appeared in their 12 O'clock. The Aviatik continued very close to target, the Taube peeled to the right. The enemy approached head on. To cut a long story short the Aviatik just missed a collision with the Avro 2S and was flanked on both sides by the Avro 1Ss. The very next turn all three tried to get the Aviatik and in so doing all three collided! I have never seen that happen before, the AI must have been drinking! As it turned out I pulled one collision card for each aircraft, one went straight ahead and the two seater and single seater climbed into each other, I pulled a damage card for each and ended up with two zero's. Now that's what I call luck!

Now I need to get back to the game and try and get the Aviatik back home with the photos, unfortunately the pilot is wounded so this should be fun.

Trev -if that would have happened in a face to face game it would have been told over and over again for years to come. That kind of stuff happens as often as a hole in one.

Yep I agree, but as I'm playing solo and not using altitude rules I should think the chances are a bit higher.

Still makes an interesting story Trev. Should be worth a few free pints in the Mess.

Now did I ever tell yo about the time my planes caught fire four times in a row on the same day.........?

Well it might have been five. You would have to ask Chris, as he was sober at the time.

I had the luckiest game ever yesterday playing the same mission. I had a SSW D.I and Halberstadt D.III trying to stop my brother with a FE2b taking the photo and a DH-2 on escort duty. My trusty SSW shot the FE's observer on its first attack. Fantastic. Meanwhile the Halberstadt got the DH-2 in its sights and inflicted both a left and right rudder jam, the DH-2 ended it's turn facing the edge of the board and had no choice but to play straight maneuvers in the next turn. Goodbye DH-2.

For me the British were not so lucky.... but I was.

Nice report Trev, like you, I also wish I had taken some photos.

    Thumbs up

The Allies were also lucky in the Solo Balloon busting game I played last Friday night at our Club. We had a French Nieuport 16 with Rockets & 2 RNAS Sop Triplanes Vs an Albatross D.II & a Halberstadt D.II with the Balloon also being defended by two "A" firing Machinegun nests.

The Nieuport hit with the first Salvo of rockets & drew a big fat Zero but on the second salvo Wham, Bam the Explosion card.
Mission accomplished but then the fun really began in a series of Dogfights. AAR with photos to come sometime next week.

'The British are so lucky': perhaps not when dealing with perfidious Albion.

Q: Why did the sun never set on the British Empire?

A: Because God didn't trust them in the dark.

No -- I'm the one flying sober, which means I only see (and shoot down) one target.

I guess all those G&Ts explain the massive overclaiming from the wars.... ;)

Well the luck does not seem to extend to this sector. Last week I took a check ride in the new triplane to see how it handled in combat. My wingman flew a SPAD - a combination that you would think covers all the bases; well after a few circuits over Fort Douamont, the Hun appeared in the shape of a Roland CII a Rumpler and one of the new Fokkers that was painted in a distinctive red & white scheme. My wing man headed for the Roland while I set my sights on the red & white machine; it appeared as though the Rumpler was acting as escort to the Fokker - perhaps a rookie pilot also on a test flight?

I closed in and fired several bursts at the new machine, but apparently to no effect.

The Rumpler intervened as if tho shepherd it's charge to safety, but a quick burst and it's rear gunner was silenced, sadly my guns jammed and I was obliged to maneuver away as the Roland had managed to evade the SPAD and was closing on me rapidly.

Tracers from it's spandau reached out to my machine Dame Fortune then took a hand as one of our AA guns nailed the blighter and he went down in flames!

My guns cleared and ready I returned to the fight; the pilot of the red & white Fokker seemed to find his game and came barreling in towards me, firing a deadly burst that jammed my rudder.

The hunter had now become the hunted! My wing man had apparently left the combat area and I was alone in the sky facing two opponents...... the Fokker pilot seemed to know my aircraft did not fare well in a left turn and took advantage of the fact another burst and the brave little triplane could take no more........

A camel sent up to investigate fared no better and was pounced on by the Hun pilots, who even arrogantly buzzed our AA gun site to show their contempt!

It seems as though the Hun pilots were members of the infamous "She Devil" squadron as our agents intercepted the following telegram: "Kristine is hereby promoted to Oberleutnant and ordered to Berlin to be presented to His Imperial Majesty, the Kaiser"

Well Stuart thats what happens when you fly a late 1916 aircraft against one of the best late 1918 ones.

Well! Out gunned and out fought Stuart.
I would have thought that you had learned all about those "She Devils" by now!
Unless of course it was a cunning ploy on your part.
The pictures and commentary were very good. Just the thing I to get my intrest rekindled after a spot of leave.

That is also what happens when your wingman flies a SPAD XIII which can't make a turn without flying off the map

Yep but we did retain the ashes..(but a very poor ending to the last test, should have let them play the last few overs..even if the Aussies did win).

LOL, indeed. In our last game at Thornbury I ended up in one of these against two Rolands. Fortunately the Roland drivers decided to fly in on opposite sides of the table so i could zoom past one, and just about turn in time to then hit the one on the other side. Rinse and repeat, two dead Rolands. But it was an "interesting" experience

Oh, and IIRC in one of the earlier games a Spad driver got left and right confused, played the wrong card and couldn't correct before he flew off the edge. Apparently an occupational hazard for those who dare to fly the mighty Spad
