Default Official Yakovlev Yak-1 Painting Thread

I had two of the same yak's in my collection but one just had the nose cone painted red and a white band with the number five to have at least some difference between them. However i didn't like it and he was sheduled for a larger repaint and this weekend it finally happend.

It think it turned out fine but had a bit of bad luck with the last layers of matt lacquer. The white of the aicraft turned darker so the outlines of the decals became more visible. Also the text on the left side turned a bit hazy and it wasn't as crisp anymore as the right side. However close-up pics reveal every default but on the table it looks more than nice for me.

The red strip from front to rear is painted with the airbrush. All other markings are homemade decals with an inkjet printer.

Great work Thomas, the winter pattern and red insignia make a striking contrast.

Thanks to Nemanja I now know what is written onto the side of my mini

To the sub-unit of the Hero of Soviet Union
Shishkin V. I.* from the kolkhoz** "Signal of the Revolution"
of the Voroshilovsk District of Sar. *** Region

    * Аlexandr Ivanovich Shishkin (1910 - 1969)
** Kolkhoz - kind of joint agricultural comune
*** Abreviation, probably for Saratov Region

Seems that production of this particular airplane (at least officialy) was funded from voluntary contibutions given by kolkhoz members.

    1/144 scale pics here.

I bought these originally as Yak-7s from...ah, I guess it was one of the F-Toys Wing Kit collections. All I remember now was that they were tough to find, expensive when i did find them, and after I bought three (I usually do fighters in pairs, what the heck though), a buddy of mine pointed out that they were in winter camo. I didn't want winter camo, but that the only way I could buy them, so after some consideration that if I screwed up a repaint, I was going to be pissed at myself...well, I went ahead and tried a summer camo repaint.

They came out OK. At least I didn't botch them to the point of having ruined them! I was relieved of that!

Since we use a D100 to check for damages, the number on the fuselage is perfect
Curious the fact the Russians did not usually put the star on upper wings but they put an additional one on the fin

    Default WGS Eastern Front 1943 - 1/200 Ares Normandie-Niemen Yakolev Yak-1B

Back when Ares first started WGS I bought two of the Deluxe Boxed sets, giving me two Durand 'white 11' Yak-1Bs. I am on night work at the moment but really wanted to get some modelling done, so I went for a quick re-decal job on my second Yak.

I painted out the 'white 11' numbers with some olive green and repainted the yellow nose on the spinner in red. I then applied the numerical code '24' on each side of the fuselage using excellent quality Microscale decals before giving her a spray of Dullcote.

'White 24' was a Yak-1B flown by French pilot Roland de la Poype serving with the Normandie Fighter Group in Russia.

Roland de la Poype finished his flight training in France in March 1940 at the age of nineteen. After the German invasion he was evacuated to England. After serving in French Equatorial Africa from July 1940 to January 1941 with the Free French Air Force, he joined the Royal Air Force as a Sergeant and was assigned to No 602 Squadron, flying Supermarine Spitfires in July 1941. A talented pilot, Sgt de la Poype was appointed wingman to the squadron's commanding officer, 32-victory Irish ace, Squadron Leader Paddy Finucane. In August 1942 De la Poype was credited with his first victory, a Messerschmitt Bf 109 shot down over Gravelines.

He was one of the first French volunteers to be sent to the Soviet Union, joining the Normandie Fighter Group. He arrived in Russia via Lebanon and Iraq on 28 November 1942. The Normandie Group were equipped with the Yak-1B fighter and attached to the 303rd Fighter Aviation Division of the 1st Air Army. On 31 August 1943 he claimed his first Russian victory, downing a Ju 87 Stuka dive-bomber.

Roland de la Poype survived the war with a score of 16 confirmed aerial victories (7 solo and 9 shared), one and 11 shared probables, and one aircraft damaged in almost 200 missions. For most of his time with the Normandie-Niemen Fighter Group he flew as wingman to the top French ace and Commanding Officer Marcel Albert. De la Poype was one of only four members of the regiment to be awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. He also received the Grand Croix of the French Légion d'Honneur, the Compagnon de la Libération (29 December 1944), the Croix de Guerre 1939-45 with 12 citations, Czechoslovak War Cross, Order of the Red Banner, Order of Lenin and Order of the Patriotic War 1st class.

Retiring from the military in 1947, Roland de la Poype set up a plastics factory and became a successful businessman, inventor and local politician. He also set up a 'Marineland' park on the Côte d'Azur in 1970 to educate the public about marine life.

Roland de la Poype passed away in 2012 at the age of 92.
