The Americans want to gain air superiority over Wake Island prior to landing but the Airfield on that island is buzzing with Japanese planes.
Flying over the ocean are five Curtiss P40 Warhawks, three F4F4 Wildcat.
Flying up to meet them are are three Kawasaki Ki-61s and five Mitsubishi Zeros.
Both sides of the sky fighters flew past each other exchanging bullets (and possibly insults).
The tight turning Zeros were making it difficult for the Americans to line up shots.
A number of planes were shot down which made it difficult to determine if any superiority was won by either side.
