Thread: Official Bristol Blenheim Mk.I/IV painting thread

Default Official Bristol Blenheim Mk.I/IV painting thread

I will start off this thread featuring the ubiquitous Bristol Blenheim Mk.I and Mk.IV bombers. In service with numerous air forces from the late 1930's including those of Great Britain, South Africa, Yugoslavia, Greece, Romania and Finland.

This one is a 1/200 Peters Planes miniature in the colours of the Free French 'Groupe Lorraine', November 1941:

Currently reading 'The Reich Intruders' by Martin Bowman, about 2Gp RAF during WWII. There are lots of scenario ideas for Blenheim IVs there, from the Battle Of France, through anti-ship strikes ('Beat' and 'Roadstead'), fighter-escorted 'Circus' and 'Ramrod' ops into France and the Low Countries, unescorted daylight attacks on German cities (Op WRECKAGE to Bremen), and then in 1942 operations against the advancing Japanese. So the Blenheim IV gives you quite a few options and longevity as a playing piece.

Nice one Carl - saw the restored Blenheim years ago before they parked it in the turf at Duxford - superb aircraft.

    Well worth adding here Carl.
The painting standard alone does you proud.
An inspiration to all those budding repainters out there.

Currently in the process of being restored again, though this time as a Blenheim I.

Great pictures Baldrick. I love the lines of the Blenheim Mk.I even more than the later Mark IV.

One of the first 1/200 'paint your own' I did back in 2009 was a Helmet Historical Aircraft Bristol Blenheim Mk.I of 57 Squadron RAF.

My next project is three more Blenheim Mk.IVs of 139 Squadron RAF deployed to France in 1939-40.

Yeah, the Blenheim I's cockpit area is instantly spotable, while the later nose resembles other Bristol designs. A shame for modellers (though definitely not for the crews) that apart from the nightfighter role (Mk.If) and a few orphans out in the Far East, the Mk.I has pretty much disappeared by May 40.

Nice pics Balders - thanks for that.

A pair of Furuta Egg Blenheim IV.

The nose/greenhouse it way off but they make OK planes for the table.

You can see the difference in Carl`s model which has the more correct `squint` look.
The Furuta models have a nose more in line with a Beaufort, not that most people are going to spot the difference in 1/200 unless they really look!

  13. #13

Yes, the Beaufort has a symmetrical nose 'greenhouse'. The major difference with the Blernheim IV is the 'trough' in the port upper nose panels to provide a better forward view for the pilot.

What Baldrick said. These also have a pod of 4 .30 cal. guns mounted under the bomb bay.

But only the Blenheim IVf fighters, used mostly by Coastal Command. The bombers didn't have the belly gunpack, although some did have a remotely-fired, rearward-facing barbette mount on the escape hatch under the nose with either 1 or 2 MGs in it.
