    Hello Flying Officer Kyte,
Great list. I've read Winged Victory by Yeates and really liked it. Same with Sagittarius Rising by Cecil Lewis from your first list. Looks like I've got more reading ahead of me. Another excellent book that I didn't notice on your lists is Goshawk Squadron by Derek Robinson. Hard to put down.
    Appreciate your effort,

Thanks for your kind words.Grey Wolf. It is always great to get feedback on work.
Guntruck and I spent some time compiling this list, and as authors generally say, any error is mine.Goshawk Squadron by Derek Robinson. being one of them. It was in my original list, as were his other two books on WW1. War Story and Hornets' sting. I must have inadvertently edited it out when rearranging the format.
Another good book that I can reccommend is Aces Falling. by Peter Hart. I've just finished it and found it most absorbing.

    Three more books.
Brief Glory. The life of Aurthur Rhys Davids. by Alex Revell.
Albert Ball V.C. The fighter pilot of World War1. by Colin Pengelly.
and Albert Ball V.C. The story of the 1st World War Ace. by Chaz Bowyer.
I cant vouch for the first two books as they only arrived today, but the third is a good read, and includes some new material.

Thanks for your efforts Rob. I was just thinking on the way in to work today, that I would really like to pick up a good book in this era. You are already way ahead of me. I think I will start with Goshawk Squadron by Derek Robinson. Anyone know why the fiction series Biggles is not available? I was curious about that. I remember reading one or two when I was a kid.

  10. #10

    Default Biggles goes West?

    Thanks for that Snowy.
I just checked Amazon and there are a lot of "Biggles " books on there.

Based on the articles in Aviation Classics it looks like Wings over the Desert by Desmond Seward and published by Haynes (yes, the car manual people!) might be a good read. Amazon are doing it at quite a discount too

Didn't know Robinson had two more WWI titles. Thanks for the heads up. Also appreciate the tip on Hart's book.

    Hello Snowy,
Yeah, try Amazon. I picked up, last year, all the books available about Biggles and they are fast and fun reads. They are published by Red Fox and came via an outlet in India.
Good hunting - they're worth it.

Just picked up this book in the local Model shop. Bristol Fighter in action. by Peter Cooksley.
Looks like one of a series by Squadron/signal publications. Anyone seen any of the others? It was just what I needed to help with my "Biff".

Yep, got most of the WW1 ones. There are some on the booklist already. They are quite good and follow the same format.

Thanks old bean. I new I had that one on the list but must have overlooked the others in the flurry of getting the list out.

Exclamation This is a bit puzzling

There's about 7 on the list, plus the F2B mentioned above. Looking at the publishers site, it would seem that at least half on the book list are out of print, although Ebay might oblige with the O.O.P. ones.

Currently available are Spads, Sopwiths, BE2, F2B and British Bombers.

Here's the puzzling bit - when I opened the (Excel) book list just now I got a message saying it was locked by me, and I could only access it as 'read only'. I know I looked at it yesterday, but closed it in the prescribed manner. Can someone open the list and see if they get a similar message coming up?

    Hi chaps,
I have always found www.abebooks.co.uk and of course www.abebooks.com excellent sources of hard to find books.
Its where I got my Chaz Bowyer and Yeates from.
For Biggles fans this is a direct link which might be useful.
    http://www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/Se...s=t&tn=biggles.
They are often cheaper than e-bay, there is no 'bidding' so no-one scams you to knock up the price, and several are free postage.
    Hope this helps.

Just got "Black Fokker Leader: Carl Degelow, the First World War's last airfighter knight" by Peter Kilduff. Apparently Kilduff has written quite a few WWI/II aviation books (12 listed on the flyleaf). I'll let you know how it reads.

Thanks for the input Oliver. I look forward to hearing about that.As I understand it Kilduff is quite good.

It opened fine on my iPad. I assume you're using the link in the first post in this thread. If so, then the file is being downloaded to your computer before being opened, so any issue would be local. My guess is that your computer thought the temporary directory used by your browser was locked, hence you getting the read only message.

A reboot of your computer should solve the issue.

    oooooh, an Ipad! Flaming show-off

I've just tried it again and it works fine - I'm putting it down to the s**t IT systems we have at work.

Neil, had a chance to look at Wings over the Desert today. Can't say I was impressed at first sight (not much book for Ł25, might just be worth it at Amazon price) but interested in what you think of it.

What I did pick up was Black Fokker Leader (Thanks Oliver for the heads-up on this one), which looks good. I feel a Fokker repaint coming on....

The mention of work IT answers everything

At Ł15 I'm hoping the book will turn out as a bargain. I'm interested in the Middle East conflict as an alternative to the Western Front as the basis of some demo games, so if I get some ideas out of it, I'll be happy.

You're welcome - maybe we can convince Dom to come out with some decals. I'd sure like to have Jasta 40 in my growing air armada and my skills aren't that great. Hear that Dom? You'll never have to pay for a drink in the O'Club ever again...

No. And I've been meaning to ask the same question.

I'm thinking of paying for a month and doing some heavy research. I don't think I would use it enough to justify a years membership.

I signed up recently for a year (Ł33 "silver" membership) and am pretty pleased - they seem to have most if not all of the profiles from various titles on there, and while Ł33 isn't cheap, it's less than a second-hand copy of one OOP book I was particularly after, and got me the artwork to that and, oh, a few more titles too.... ;-)

Teach me to look in more detail I hadn't realised there were two levels of membership, or that you had to sign up for a minimum of a year. I think I may treat myself to a years Silver membership as a birthday present.

First time I looked, I spotted the minimum 1 year (good sense really, as otherwise the temptation to sign up form a month and hammer the archive / chuck in a big order with the discount would be obvious) but also missed the two-tier membership. The "gold" doesn't look a good buy, as frankly Ospreys aren't tricky to find at that level of discount anyway, but once I realised there was a silver option there, it seemed a good bet....

  35. #35

    Hi Neil,
I was thinking along your lines, but the monthly membership is a 12 months contract. I decided to take a chance on the silver subscription, for Ł3 monthly, and I am waiting to access the facilities. They reckon you can have to wait up to 2 hours before the activation is complete.

I really enjoyed Kilduff's book. It was interesting to see Degelow's view of the war from one of the not elite Jastas. Kilduff's research was very well done and I'm very impressed with Degelow, the man, as a leader. EXCELLENT READ.

Thanks for the tip! I went to the site you recommended and checked it out.
Sounds good, looks like another title I need to add to my library. While on that site, I also noticed a series put out by the BBC in 1977 called "Wings".
That sounds good, too, and needs to be another addition to my collection.

Try looking at the thread I started some time back, on" wings" . There was also a bit about it a few days ago, so if you do a search it should come up.

Hi Bob. The original list of titles that I and Guntruck compiled was non-fiction only to help inform pilots on what was available for research purposes.
Although the superb Derek Robinson books were not included, they have been given a good airing on the site.
What we now need is someone to compile a fiction list to accompany our existing sticky.

Col as a surgestion how about we have a libary attachment to sight, just like in members lists. Alphabetical order Author, date name of book, publisher, and no more than 20 words about the book or why members think the book is so good, I have to say a virtual libary would be a useful tool for gamers (personal bias)!

Good idea. When I assembled that I only had Guntruck to help me, and it was a big task for us just collating from all the different threads. Maybe if you ask the Col. nicely he will let you edit it and then place it in a prominent position.
