Are there going to be similar contest for flights composed of other series 5 airplanes too?

  3. #3

    Default

I don't have any planned at this time.

  4. #4

Awww. I do not have any use whatsoever for two more D.H.2's, since that is a considerable expense, however, I could use more Fokker A.III's or Morane Saulnier N's.

Pity the contest is not for the any of the four types in series 5.

An interesting idea, this one. I'll pass (I already have five DH.2s, and my disposable wonga is going on other stuff this month) but it will be good to see how many entries you get for this.

Excellent idea with the flights, Herr Oberst!

I've got two and I don't like them much...

Maybe a reason to repaint them.

Any pictures, how to rig them - to have a chance?

That's all up to those that enter

Finding a pair of DH.2s interesting enough to paint up should be a real challenge. I take it we can't just paint one plane to go with a stock plane in the same unit?

  11. #11

    Default

As long as both minis are painted, they could both be drab run of the mill birds.

  12. #12

The series 5 aircraft haven't hit the stores here yet. So guess i'll have to pass.

The most challenging - and the least exciting - of the set to repaint. There's lots of opportunities for the Moranes, in French, British and Russian service. Possibly even more for the Halberstadts. A few for the Fokkers. But the DH2s? CDL, grey, PC10. Different serials. Some markings on struts indicating flight that's it.

OK, let's look at A flight, 24 Sqdn. Hawker's mob. Red and White striped struts and red wheel hubs on A flight. Sometimes red numbers.

Hey, no one said this would not be a challenging painting contest. Like the Giant contest, I think few will enter, but that just increase the chance of winning for those that do.

  18. #18

Hmmmm... I'm thinking of X flight - 3 DH2's from 111 Sqdn that provided Lawrence with his air support in Arabia.

Or possibly this one, thought to be the last DH2 to have a victory in the air, fighting in Sinai. A2628. 8 August 1917

"The guard is there to stop the thieving Australians from stripping the aeroplane for souvenirs. I have no doubt that within the hour all that would be left of the aeroplane would be the shadow and even then someone would be trying to pry that off the ground.").

  19. #19

    Smile

Sadly I will have to pass on this one as well. I have done my Shapeways ones & have Andrews Ares one so further DH-2's are unnecessary & I am waiting for those loverly new Tripes, Aviatics & SSW's.

Serious question; does it have to be a REAL unit/flight, or can we get creative? As Zoe has pointed out, not a lot of options for interesting schemes

Related question, how long to post to Australia if I order them from AA in the coming week?

    Dave

  21. #21

Rat, yes they can be from a Fantasy flight. Usually 10-12 days to get them down there, so you should still have around a month to work on them.

    *sigh*
After investigation, I think I'm gonna have to skip this one. The only schemes I've found to be worth painting up for the DH.2 require white decals, and I haven't come across a set that has satisfactory lettering in the right size. Besides, it sounds like you're going ot have at least 4 entrants, so my odds of top three really start to plummet.

Looking forward to seeing the entries.

    Default DH2 Rigging

I just thought you may need to know the rigging plan see attached sketch of the line runs?
You also need to repeat W,X,Y and Z on the lower section of the rear struts.
Sorry my 13 came out like a B on the scan 13 is the top inside strut at the front sorry for any mix up

What type/weight of string did you use for the rigging?

I used Guterman Polyester thread from the local craft shop it was the thinnest they had in, the colour was 788 steel grey.

    I hope this helps

Great work Kevin. I remember when I was a kid rigging a 1/72 scale Revell DH2 with brown cotton from my mum's sewing box - but I don't know if I can get motivated enough to rig the WGF version!

You must have a awful lot of patience to rig that early bird, I know by look of yours that it was a real labour of love.

    Default Secret to rigging??

The real secret to rigging is to work out your thread run in advance, tie the thread in a loop and then use a cocktail stick to apply the super glue to the thread.
The glue soaks into the thread holding it to the struts, by doing one small section at a time say A to B and gluing A you can work your way around the aircraft do not try to do too much as you will find it begins to get loose, it only takes seconds for the glue to set if you are in a warm room you can then move on to the next section fixing it and glueing B.
It is a little slow but I do think the results are worth the effort, check out my photo album for other rigging.

    I hope this helps.

    Regards Kev

I'm struggling on this. I want to enter, but the historical schemes aren't overly exciting.
I suppose that's what is challenging about it.

If a fantasy pilot + wingman idea pops in my head, then I'll get my brushes out
