Thread: New 1/144 WWI Manufacturer!

  1. #1

    Default New 1/144 WWI Manufacturer!

It appears there's more competition on the block. Valom, from the Czech Republic, has released a 1/144 scale Sopwith Pup, apparently with 4 choices of markings. A Fokker D.VII is slated for release in mid-year.

Thanks, this is indeed fabulous news and even more so for the Fokker DVII. I shall be ordering. I hope this series takes off (sorry!) for them.

OK chaps, I have spoken to Valom and they have told me that if these kits sell well enough they will be doing more WW1 1/144 models. So if you want this range to expand buy some.

Does anyone know how these stand up to the rigours of being shuttled around a gaming table?

Not yet as they have just been released but Valom tell me the kits are aimed at offering a more refined 1/144 model for the wargames market that is a more practical alternative to the SRAM resin kits. In other words they have been aimed more for wargamers than model makers.

As soon as I get a box I'll post and let folks know.

If anyone wants to order the Sopwiths, the cost is 12.45 Euros (Ł11.13 at present) including P & P to the UK.
Vaclav accepts Paypal to make it easier.

Vaclav? Don. I'd get two Pups at that price if I knew where to go for them.

    Valom's 2013 Line-Up

Václav Lomitzki has sent us details of some of his releases for this year in 1:144 and 1:72 - the first of which is already available.

With interest in WW1 aviation reaching new heights, the new 1:144 Dual Kits of the Sopwith Pup and Fokker D.VII looks to be very well timed additions to the range:
    Kits in 1/144 scale:

14402 Sopwith Pup (Dual Combo), four markings – first all plastic kit from WW I period in this scale – now is available

14403 Fokker D.VII (Dual Combo , four markings including lozenge, in sale May-June

I got mine a bit cheaper than Ł11.13 but that's down to exchange rates when the Pay Pal transaction goes through.

That's not a bad price , will definitely buy some of these new models.

Mine worked out at Ł5.30 per plane including delivery, cheaper than Red Eagle metal kits and I suspect they will look a whole lot better. I can afford that but I'm currently not prepared to pay the Ł12 that a WOG painted now model retails at in the UK. As soon as I can I'll put up some images of the sprues/frames.

Since I've been modelling 1918 I didn't strictly speaking need Pups but I wanted to support this new range and see it succeed and grow so I've just started 1917 as well.

Nope, email address for Vaclav (who I think is the designer and/or owner of Valom) is on the right hand side of the home page. Email him telling him how many boxes you want and that you are in the UK and he'll email you back a price. You transfer the funds to his email via Pay Pal using the send money option and Vaclav will send you a confirmation email. He was able to get mine in the post the same day but I get the feeling he's going to be getting very busy.

    Chaps,

Mine have arrived. They've got here so quickly that my camera isn't charged. Ok so what are they like?

First up, lovely decals included for:
    Lee 46sqd Chin Chow
    Stewart 54 sqd
    Dunning HMS Furrious
    and a Japanese plane

The kit is very well moulded. Now the rub is that these are scale models and the struts and some details are brass etch. I'm going to replace these with plastic or brass rod for strength. I'd say the kit is somewhere between a metal (Red Eagle kit) and SRAM to build. I'd say you need modelling skill to make them and these aren't fast build wargame models but you'll end up with a model that looks far better than anything else. No pilot figure but there is a seat.

If you build from the kit you'll end up with a scale model, if you adapt the kits you'll end up with a very nice wargaming piece for a reasonable cost.

That sounds highly encouraging! I'm Pupped out at the moment (I ended up with five from Shapeways) but I'll be splurging on a few D.VIIs when they are available

Great news, thanks for sharing! Shame that I've already got 6 pups and 17 d.viis. This really doesn't help my d.vii addiction which is already spiraling out of control but I can't stop. Let's hope they sell well and bring out more aircraft in the future.

I have seen the Sopwith Pup double pack today in a local shop. It looks so nice, especially for the money . And the Fokker VII, which is planned for June or so, is supposed to be even more detailed. I can't wait for that.

    Lino,
I'd heard of a price of about 10 euros for a double-pack on-line: does that seem accurate with what you've actually seen in a shop?

Indeed, I wouldn't mind seeing a picture of the box contents. I am very eager to see how everything looks and how it turns out!

Just spotted that the Pup is on ebay already.
Slightly more expensive than buying direct.

Default Valom Sopwith Pup contents of box

Here are the contents of the box

Two injection molded Sopwith Pup kits
Two sets of photoetched parts (one missing from my box but Vaclav had already realised it was missing and has sent another set already)
One Set of decals for four different aircraft
One set of instructions in English and Czech including Humbrol paint numbers to use
Painting and decals details on back of box

Looks pretty good to me the main problem I can see will be handling such small parts
