From April to July 1942 the A-24 Banshees of the 8th Bombardment Squadron, 3rd Bombardment Group flew missions against the Japanese out of Port Moresby.

Looking good Carl. Very nice. What color do you use for your upper surfaces?

    Hi Tony,

Tamiya olive drab enamel. It looks a bit dark initially but the TS80 flat clear lightens it up a little.

I thought I would do some USAAF Banshees for something different. These AIM resin minis are great to paint.

    Cheers,

    Carl.

They certainly look very good Carl. I will have to bear them in mind if I decide to expand my combat area.

The more and more I look at these WW2 planes the more and more I want to jump into WGS as well. But alas, I must resist... or suffer the wrath of the swmbo! Nice jobs on all of them.

I resisted for two years with the help of WWII Anonymous Stephen.
But last week I finally cracked, succumbed to the pretty colours, and bought my first plane. Within days I was on a three a day habit.

It is indeed a slippery slope Rob. Now you will have to decide on what scale to focus on 1/200 or 1/144.
    Good luck

Have to say you have me beat. I only have 82 wings WWII planes and 90 WWI with the next series on order. Also 95 F-Toys and 3 AIM Kates that I have to get decals on. SWMBO ask why I need so many an d I just tell her because they are there.

Rob, the Merit models look really nice repainted. These go with the 1/200 USS Hornet don't they (I've had my eye on that ship, but there's just no room for such a large model in my space).

  24. #24

They are intended for the Hornet Jim, but I prefer to have them flying above reduced scale Flat tops.
    Looks better in photographs.

Agreed. Forced perspective is a wonderful thing. We use it in model railroading all the time, especially us N-scalers.

Rob, did you find those Merit aircraft easy to mount to the stand? I'm thinking of getting a few to supplement my US pacific force, as well as a few Wildcats since they seem to be pretty hard to find these days.

    Simples Wes !
I just countersunk the slot where the arm of the stand fits into the model and glued one of the Oberst's ball barings for the gimble mounts into it.

Thanks, also, would that just be the scout stand from the AA site? As I understand the SBD's are fairly small two seaters.

    Yes on both counts Wes.
They are AA bases and the Dauntless had a crew of two.

Yes but you need the Stuka stand for them for the rear gun arc.

Thanks guys. I'm sure the ARES ones will be nice but they won't look battle worn. I prefer planes that have that look of wear on them. I still have 6 more AIM ones to do which is great as I can paint some to mate up with the ARES ones.

  46. #46

Again, I didn't paint these. I asked if it was possible to get a Dauntless with the cockpit open. And Kevin (user miscmini) did - he took an AIM model (I think) "I would remove the blacked out area of the canopy, the peg, and add some type of crew figure as well." I love it. He even put then in VS-8 markings - to match my chosen carrier in the "Fire in the Skies" campain. Click image for larger version.

All we need to do now is get Kev to reply so we can slip him some Rep.
Let me know when he replies.

Two SBDs of Bombing Three off the Yorktown looking for the Japanese carreirs near Midway, 4 June 1942. Models are repaints of the Ares Ruet A-24, currently available on clearance from Miniature Market. The Ruet Banshee might be the most striking of the three schemes used for Ares releases (I do like the Kirkendahl SBD-5, but light gray instead of white for the USN tricolor scheme?), but to me the models look far better as as 1942-era Slow But Deadlys. Paints used were Italeri and Vallejo, with panel lines and dive brake perforations accented by pencil and the soft plastic radio masts removed and replaced. Decals are by Miscellaneous Miniatures.

A couple early war A24s. I copied the paint scheme from the plane we have in the US Air Force museum. The only thing I couldn’t do was get that long tail number. Had to go with the same color, but lower value, larger numbers. Does anyone know the unit of this plane?
