An upcoming public gaming event at the FLGS had us scrambling to find an appropriate set of defenders against the Zeppelin menace.
What better subject for a model than Leefe Robinson's BE2c? Hello, Shapeways, I need an aircraft....

May I ask how you got the beams from your searchlight to show up so well Bob.
I have a mini searchlight from a model boat, but I can't get it to produce those beams without very heavy smoking.

There is a mini Maglite just out of frame and that is a bit of flare in the lens that was captured as I took the shot. Not planned but I liked the effect. I had positioned the light below the tables edge to reduce the amount of light to what you see.

    Hi

Am near to completing a couple of Shapeways BE2c, I think they were the later model with vertical exhausts and a rear facing observer with mg.

Can anyone please advise the firing arc(s) to put on the base as most seem to only have a front arc (which is near impossible without shooting off propeller or struts) o I am assuming is rear facing (over pilot and to sides) but with a blind spot again at the rear?

I would assume two narrow arcs to either side of the rear?

Second question, are there any plane cards for this model?

    Thanks

    Baz

My Pair of Be2c’s from Shapeways.

One in livery of early 1915 (unit unknown), I have used discretion and numbered it 925 which was one of the early Bristol factory Be2c’s (200) provided to France and one in France 1916 16th squadron colours and again a batch number produced by the royal airforce factory.

One of the personal accounts I have read (possible: Wind in the Wires, Duncan Grinnell-Milne), stated that one of the armaments option for the BE 2c was a machinegun in a fixed mount, firing forward, at a roughly 45degree angle. Very awkward to use, but yes, mounted thusly to clear the propeller arc. "Fokker Fodder", (Paul R Hare), has the 2c also using a couple of other mounts: either in a rack on either side of the observer's cockpit (in front), and the observer could switch the machinegun from left to right rack in flight; a third option was mounted , apparently on the right side only, firing from a fixed mount, to a 45 degree angle forward (different from the first mount mentioned: the first one was 45 degrees in the vertical plane: this is 45 degrees right in the horizontal plane). Quite a large measure of experimentation in these early birdss.

Interestingly the model supplied (as a late BE2c) has the mg in the front observer position but pointing back over the pilot left shoulder. Assume it is on a rial so can move to the opposite side, but not sure how practical to fire above the pilot in the middle position?

Very nice BE2c's! For that model I chose the "goal post" mounting, with a Lewis attached to a bar for firing over the pilot's head, as shown below. There were a lot of choices of gun mounts to choose from, none of them very good. I always wondered why the RFC didn't learn from experience and do as the Belgians did with their BE2c's -- swap the observer and pilot and give the observer a more conventional gun mount. Perhaps they were just trying to produce aircraft as fast as they could and had no time & manpower for improvements.

Ok thank you for your reply. As. I guessed these would be rear only firing models on the card with a blind spot at lower altitude behind. As you say there are many variations of this model with guns, hand made mounts and various options. Thanks for the info.

Although not technically a BE2 class aircraft, I thought it best to put my BE12e in this thread. Its a Shapeways by Reduced Aircraft Factory model which I painted based on a drawing of one located on the Wings Palette website (wp.scn.ru) added below. Will be useful in bombing runs in the Sinai even though the color scheme may not be right for that theater. Used Testor's matt olive and Humbrol linen.
