Post Official Vickers FB 5 "Gunbus Painting Thread.

Hi Folks! Here is my Camo Gunbus based on an actual 1 Sqd "Bus" as per the B & W pic.
Apparently it was the only one done in Camo & achieved at least 4 victories whilst flown by different crews.
(Info from Osprey's Pusher Aces book)

Note: In the last pic taken on the Games mat I had added the Pilot & Gunner.

Very nice work Barry. Is that a Shapeways model perchance?

Yes Rob just a WSF but it had very good detail & not much "fuzz"!

I bought the 4 pak and I can't remember which Shapeways seller it was from but it the crew in the cockpit. I have one done in PC and planned one in CDL and another in a camo of CDL and grey I found on yahoo pictures. I really like the early war a/c and wish that Ares would put out a Be2 and a Fee.

I have the 4 pack from reduced aircraft factory, I ran out of decals, and am waiting on an order from Dom to finish off the flight.

Nice looking models. I've downloaded some plans and I'm trying to work them to 1/144th scale then I might have a go at rendering a gunbus in balsa and plasticard.

Nicely done! I always look forward to seeing one of my designs fully painted...you've really brought it to life.

    Very good aircraft.
You can tell that Shapeways have upped their game, and are doing your very nice designs justice at last.

If the models are good then the painting follows suit. Thanks for putting in the time to design these things.

Well, I've mostly finished (still awaiting crew!) my Gunbus for the upcoming Early War campaign - not up to everyone else's standards but should be OK for the table - I did notice (too late) that I had used later roundels with white surrounds

Brian, you can get rid of the white surrounding the roundels with a simple coat of the color you used for the wing surface. It takes a bit of patience, but if you keep a moist spare brush nearby to correct any mistake it is not such a great chore.
And I agree with you 100%: close up photos always make your WSF models look terribly grainy, but they are still looking good on the playing table !

Brian, you're having a go, always good in my book. Some of mine look great if I don't wear my glasses!

Thanks for the tip Eric - typical "too close to the problem" issue here, as that hadn't occurred to me - so back to the paint shop for a touch-up

Thanks - with me it's that I am severely colour-blind (not just red-green, it affects the entire spectrum for my eyes) so that makes painting difficult as I sometimes can't "see" where colours are wrong etc. (I've never been able to paint horses for my cavalry armies, and can't mix paints so PC10 is straight Vallejo Brown Violet for me)

    Looks O.K. to me Brian.
When the Hun comes calling any plane is better than no plane at all.
As you say for the table it is fine. Only the purists will notice the roundels, and only then if they look underneath. Then they should be too polite to mention it. If they do, just make a mental note not to play with them again. i thiunk you have done remarkably well. Each month that passes I am struggling with my eyes more so I know how you feel. just reflect on the number of people with perfect sight who could not achieve your standard of workmanship. That puts it in perspective.

I read somewhere that when the RFC adopted the roundel, they instructed squadrons to keep the Union flag on the wingtips, so one of my 'bus's is from 1914, still flying in 1915.

I'm with Daryl on this one: there's something about them, even though they're fragile and ungainly. Good job on the squadron!

That's one hell of a prepping job, Neil. If your plane looks that nice up close, it must be stunning at arms length.

I followed Zoe's instructions to the letter, well almost. I applied a coat of watered down PVA glue and let it dry. I repeated the process twice more. Leaving 24 hours between each coat. I didn't file down as I was worried about the flimsy nature of the wings and my heavy handidness snapping the wings or breaking struts. I used:

Model Colour Flat Brown 984: For all the struts.
Model Colour Flat Earth 983: For the Hull borders, Pilot hats and prop.
Model Colour Desert Yellow 125: For the pilots coats.
Citadel (dry) Hexos Palesun mixed with Model Colour 951 White for the Fuselage and wings.
The same again but more white for dry brushing over to pick out the ribs and edges.
Citadel Abaddon Black and Citadel Tin Bitz for the engine, pilots goggles and machine gun.
Citadel Bugmans Glow: for the pilot's faces and hands.
and a spot of silver for the goggle lenses and centre prop.
See you on the Dark Side......

Haven't flown it-need to add some Albatros B.Is and B.IIIs to my German forces, since Eindeckers rarely ventured across the lines.
