Thread: Curtiss P40E Tomahawk (112 Sqn RAF)

  1. #1

Default Curtiss P40E Tomahawk (112 Sqn RAF)

These planes are from the 1/144 Wing Kit Collection Vol.7. They have had a few extra details painted on. They are based on Litko bases by carefully drilling a small hole in the forward part of the drop tank and inserting a peg made from #222 Evergreen plastic rod.

The kit comes with 2 sets of decals for:
    GA-C
    GA-F

GA-A & GA-G are made by cutting up one extra set of decals from the kits, meaning that I still have 3 complete sets spare for use elsewhere.

I hope that you like them!

Thank you. The closest 109 and the two MC.200 are Sweet ts. The other 109 is a F Toys also. I modeled the Sweet 109 after one Franz Stiglers desert birds.

That, good sir, is a squadron standard; navies have an ensign, as does the RAF as a whole force.

As far as I can tell, 112 Sqn has no direct association with Ely or Cambridgeshire; the closest base I can find from which 112 Sqn operated is RAF Woodhall Spa in south Lincolnshire, as a Bloodhound SAM sqn in the mid-'60s. Cambridgeshire is more associated with Bomber Command than fighters, and probably more with the USAAF 8th Air Force than anyone else. However, there is a window in Ely Cathedral displaying the heraldry of 2, 3, 8 and 100 Groups RAF:

but for the 'Mighty 8th', you need to go to the American Cemetery at Madingley, just outside Cambridge.

Not quite: the 'One Hundred and Twelfth (112th) Squadron' was a USAAF Observation unit apparently based in Florida, while 'One-One-Two (112) Squadron' was an RAF fighter unit best known for the use of Shark's Mouth markings on its aircraft (P40B/C Tomahawk, P40E/K/M/N Kittyhawk, P51B/C Mustang).

    WWII http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No._112_Squadron_RAF

As far as American versions, 112 Squadron seemed to have participated in WW2 as a B-24 unit. http://www.f-16.net/units_article67.html

Only 112 squadron I can find for American that is observation type (VAW-112) that was carrier based and formed in 1967.

Sorry; my knowledge of flags comes from an earlier time, when that shape would have been an ensign.
Thanks for the stained glass though; another love of mine. I wish I could see it in person.

No worries: all part of that complex minefield which is British military English!

From wiki: 'In 1943, King George VI approved the award of a Standard to RAF squadrons who have 25 years of service in either the RAF, Royal Auxiliary Air Force, Royal Naval Air Service or Royal Flying Corps. Standards can also be awarded to units which have "earned the King's appreciation for outstanding operations". A squadron can embroider the names of up to 10 battle honours on its standard, known as "emblazoning the honour".'

The Royal Air Force has an Ensign. From the RAF website: 'The Ensign was officially introduced in December 1920, and on 24 March 1921, the King signed an Order in Council, thus defining its status and protecting it for authorised use.

The Royal Air Force Ensign is flown daily at established RAF stations. For reasons of modern day practicality, the flag is formally raised and lowered at a suitable hour just before and after routine working times respectively. This is done by station duty staff and sometimes at a unit parade on particular occasions.

At major formation headquarters the ensign is flown at the head of the staff atop the main headquarters building, while on a station the maritime custom is more closely followed.

The size of the ensign flown is usually 3 feet by 6 feet (0.91m x 1.82m). On important days and on days when a formal inspection is to take place, then an ensign twice this size is flown. When the situation dictates however, such as on a high building, a much larger ensign is flown to give an enhanced aesthetic appearance.

Hey Rich, are those MC 200s the ones with the camo decals or did you paint the wings?
